Would you get the vet out for this?

Went to the field tonight to find Chad with this:

There is no swelling, he is not lame and the wound is clean and dry. I am inclined to leave it as it is, do you think thats the right thing to do?
 
If he's happy to let you do it I'd be inclined to trim away some of the hair around the edges of the wound, but otherwise leave well alone.

I am assuming tetanus is up to date (I knowyours will be) so, no, I would just keep it clean and keep an eye on it. Have you applied anything?
 
I wouldn't get the vet out right now. Keep it clean (wound powder or something similar). Keep dry and just watch for any leaky stuff - normally yellow - which might indicate infection. If it is leaking I would call the vet. It doesn't look esp deep??
 
go along with all the others but I hate these sort of wounds - just begging to have the edges pulled together but really no other need to get a vet out! Don't know if you can buy surgical superglue but it'd be sooo useful for this sort of thing!

I think sometime ago I actually read an article in the vet section of H&H saying it was best to put no barrier on a wound at all?? Anyone heard that?
 
Yep, and it is something I have always advocated and *touch wood* never had a problem yet

Ted's leg has a long skinned area below where his stitches are and I have not touched it at all and it is absolutely fine. Unless there are obvious foreign bodies in skinning incidents, leave alone, IMO!
 
It's a really minor wound although it looks nasty. Just skinned really and very clean and dry. If he was human or canine I would leave it without any treatment at all but just wanted to see what others opinions were. From its position and shape I am thinking Ellie has kicked him, she is being very mareish this last few days and not very tollerant of him. He was certainly keeping well away from her this evening, so lesson learnt on his part

It may look clean but you never know what's in it. I would clean it with a hibiscrub type solution & then put a smear of vaseline/sudocrem on the top & leave it. It is quite possible that there will be some swelling tomorrow but check the wound again & clean & replace the vaseline. This will keep foreign bodies out of it after 48 hours is should have started scabbing over & then I'd leave it alone & it'll heal up. It looks worse than it is due to his leg being white.
 
But the edges don't need to be pulled together

it's not a cut, just a skinning wound i.e. has taken the top layer of skin off.
