normally fed on calm and condition, ready grass and chaff (depends what sort, but just the normal stuff, not hi-fi or alpha-a etc)

he normally is ok for what i do with him, but off to a HT comp at the weekend, and he just lacks a bit of spark, so wondered if a little bit of competition mix on friday and saturday would spark him up a bit.

He is a TB, but never really heats up on any "normal" type of food

Have you competed him before?

I ask because I used to feed my boy pasture mix and he was ALWAYS fizzy. Switched to Top Spec Cool Conditioner over the winter and he's become almost sluggish at home to the point where I was worried he wouldn't make it through the day at a comp. However at Stileman's the weekend before last he was a real old whirligig and I was pleased I hadn't given him anything to pep him up!!

Well, he's your horse so only you can answer that. But... I have a pony similar who seems to tire quickly. I have found Spillers Instant Response energy mix best for him, rather than comp mix, which I tried first. It doesn't send him silly, just gives him that elusive "spark" and he keeps going.

been out to lots of comps... hes ok dressage, just bit slow when it comes to just the extra omph... and I didnt say changing the food, just adding a little extra to what he has

My boy is tb and laid back with everything(Absolutely nothing gives him serious ooomph, lol)!!!However i did find 1 yr putting him on comp mix did perk him up a tad(purely due to the fact he was on cool mix and it wasnt supporting the work he was doing)!!!!
I cant imagine that the sprinkling you would give for a couple of days(introducing gradually blah blah, lol, will make any difference at all)!!!
If he dosnt heat up as norm would it not pay you to put him on comp mix as a full time thing whilst in regular work????I found it non heating but he had more energy!!!

I echo this entirely. If you are going to introduce a new feed (which he may well need) do it gradually.

Agree with others to change feed gradually. If you continue to think he needs a little more energy for the competition season why not change him to very low amounts of competition mix and then you could give a little more in the lead up to a competition. That way his gut is used to the feed and the increase of what he already has should provide more energy without the possibility of digestive problems.

Good luck!
