Would you give your horse the day off after the dentist?

Horse has dentist tomorrow morning and have lesson booked for afternoon. Everyone on the yard gives their horse the day or day after off - is this best? Don't really have time to give him the day off - need to practise my dressage!

I usually do, my dentist has said after he's given him a normal rasp that it's ok to ride him, but if I'd just had my teeth done i wouldn't be overally keen about a bit in my mouth! Ask your dentist after they've done the work :)

It will probably depend on what treatment he has. If it's all routine then he'll probably be fine being worked straight after. If it's a bit more invasive then he might benefit from a day or so off. A bit like you going to the dentist really. If all your dentist does is have a quick look and say everything is fine then you'll be ok. If you have a filling or other treatment, you might feel a little sensitive. Hope that helps. :) x

If its just a routine rasping, I ride immediately afterwards. ( horse isn't sedated- obviously I wouldn't ride if he was )
When he had a tooth out, he had a week off from having a bit in his mouth, so I just did gound work with a lunge cavesson instead.
Kx

Depends on the horse and what he gets done.
One of mine thinks the world is ending if he gets anything remotely medical done and needs a day off to feel sorry for himself. Not to mention he huffs so much you wouldn't want to ride him after anyway!

The other one is happy to get on with life. He usually is fine to be ridden right after a rasp. Last time however the rasp caught his gum and so he got an afternoon off just in case his mouth was uncomfortable.
