Would you give your passport to the livery yard?

Its not a case of trusting them with it, for me, its a case of I know full well I wouldnt be able to get it back easily when I need it, especially short notice if I decided, right think I will box to the beach today.
Nothing whatsoever with trusting them with a horse

Yes, my boys passport is with the livery yard owner. When we are off competing I just take it with us & give it back to her when we return.

I was always lead to believe the passport had to stay with the horse.

To be honest I'm not bothered either way. If I didn't trust a yard to look after a bit of paper then I sure as hell wouldn't want them looking after my horse.
Totally agree with this!

I leave my passport at the yard, as do most of the other liveries although it's not in the contract. I have full access to it at all times as all the passports are kept in a box in the tack room (which is like Fort Knox and locked at all times). If I couldn't have ready access to it then I would just hand over photocopies.

From Defra Site:-

'Horses and other equidae must be accompanied by their passport at all times, except when:

stabled
at pasture
moved on foot and where the passport can be retrieved within three hours'

Basically if the horse is at a yard then the passport should be available within 3 hours, if it is not available from the owner within the three hours then really it should be kept at the yard with the YO.

This is what the law states, what you wish to do as individuals is a matter for yourselves. If however you don't leave the passports with your YO & the passports are required for inspection & you cannot get them there within the 3 hours then apart from you getting into trouble you could also be getting your YO into trouble & it's not even their horse. :(

That's a very good point! Why trust the yard with your horse if you wouldn't trust them with the passport?

I don't - I am no longer there. I am asking as I have friends who are still there.

This is a new thing that he's asking for since a lot of liveries have left the yard... And its not in the contract to hand it to them either.

And as they aren't there for the vet and do not transport any horses for owners I cannot see why they should have it, other than as someone else said - a tool to extract money from someone who's leaving for "forgotten extra's".

If it were in a securely locked easily accessible place for the liveries - then I would not have any issue. BUT, it's not - they'll be locked in the farmhouse and tracking them down for mundane things needed at the yard can be an issue as its a busy working farm and they're not always around...

Thanks again all for your input - I shall point my friends to this thread X

It is part of my contract that my liveries need to keep their passports at the yard. I need them for vaccinations, transporting them to competitions or hunting, and because I can't remember how everything is bred when vets ask me.

Each horse has a file in a filing cabinet in the tack room, and liveries know that they can take their passports out whenever they want to. If they are transporting them then of course the passport goes with the horse, but as a rule, they live in the tack room as they're legally supposed to stay with the horse.

Exactly. When The GD was on full/schooling livery they held his passport. Made sense as they sorted out all vet visits. Every other yard, though (all DIY or assisted), I have kept his passport. I am always present for the vet - I travel him - I see no reason for anyone but me to hold his passport.

Currently, I keep my Fuzzies passports at home & so does lovely livery.
However, when she went on holiday I asked her for GF's passport - 'just in case' & she was happy to hand it over.
We keep photocopies at the yard at all times tho, just so both of us know all info on the Fuzzies if an emergency vet visit etc is needed.

I carry copies of the Fuzzies passports if I go out locally in box, but if going further afield would then take originals with me.

In the past, I've had all 'custody' of passports/vacc docs for each animal on the yard as most were show liveries or breakers & schoolers.

The passport doesnt need to be with the horse unless its travelling, or competing at shows/events,away from yard, at vets etc, You have 3 hrs to produce it if requested, has anyone ever been asked to produce theirs on anything but a BHS yard thats being inspected ?
Im not on a yard, but rent my own place, my horses passport stays at home 5 mins away

No, because I would not trust them to hand it over in a timely manner when I needed it. I have enough to worry about without the extra stress of forgetting a passport when going to a show or not being able to get hold of YO.

It is not a matter of trusting them with a piece of paper and/or my horses - it is a DIY livery so they don't look after my horses - just the land they stand on!

That's a very good point! Why trust the yard with your horse if you wouldn't trust them with the passport?

This. I had no problem with the horses PPs being held at the stables by the YO. I wouldnt consider my horse living at a yard where I trusted the YO so little that I wouldnt leave the PP with them, not in a million years.

In addition, the horses were on part livery and vet visits etc or emergencies might require them to be there.

Of course there should be ready access to them, but thats easily arranged (we had very secure tackroom and folder with PPs).

Unless I could guarantee always to get to the yard within 3 hours, the PP should be at the yard. And for horses on P/L and full livery, the YO is effectively the day to day 'keeper' of the horse. Nothing to do with ownership. So long as I have the receipt for buying the horse, that's proof - PP isnt.

If the horse was in training with a pro, yes otherwise no. Emergency transport to the vet is one of the exceptions to having the passport with you according to the very helpful lady I spoke to. We went into this as we were collecting a horse whose passport had disappeared, and we had to jump through lots of hoops. She was very helpful. They donot do spot inspections, as defra themselves don't really check passports, it is the trading standards people at the local council. My horse would never be on full livery, but if it was, and the passport was with the tack, then I would consider it. However for a farmer to want it sounds rather suspicious.

Nope. I do DIY so have no need of the YO to arrange anything for me.

They would get a copy of treatment and vaccinations page and a copy of the page stamped not for human consumption in case of emergencies but that's it. My passport stays with me.

And I don't agree with the whole don't trust them with the passport don't trust them with the horse, its just personal preference NOT to have to ask some YO for my passport when I want to compete or travel my horse.

I think there is a big difference between DIY and part/full livery. I don't do DIY but if I did, I would not ask for the passports, as no need.

The regulation says it is illegal to posses a horse without the passport and also says
1. The identification document shall accompany registered
equidae and equidae for breeding and production at all times.
2. By way of derogation from paragraph 1, the identification
document need not accompany equidae referred to in that
paragraph on the occasions when they are:
(a) stabled or on pasture, and the identification document can
be produced without delay by the keeper;
(b) moved temporarily on foot either:
(i) in the vicinity of the holding within a Member State so
that the identification document can be produced within
a period of three hours;
Some studbooks issue a Certificate of Ownership so that you can keep that separate from the passport and the passports is a passport of the horses not a proof of ownership

I was on a yard once where the YO asked for the passports, incase of an inspection. Obviously I didn't want to hand over my boys passport so I just did a photocopy of the first page I think it was, with his ID number, name etc and then the page with the markings etc and the page that had me down as the owner.

I gave my passport to my YO to keep at the yard and was more than happy to do so. She is also my friend so I have no problem with this - it means that come vaccination time, I make the vet appt, she has the passport for him to stamp and I don't even have to be there - plus if I'm going to a show I wont forget it and leave it in the house cause its already at the yard.

My YO holds ours. It really doesn't bother me - it's easy to get when I need it and she has it if she ever needs it, or for vet visits etc.
