Would you go abroad to buy a horse?

I would probably consider going abroad if I was a serious competitor or if I was interested in a continental breed. However, being interested in welsh section As and Ds, I have more than enough choice where I live! If I went abroad to look for welshies it would be counter productive really as most of them would have been imported from Wales, or Britain at least. So for my purposes there's no better place on earth to buy quality welsh breeds, and cob day at the Royal Welsh Show is testament to that. But if I had other requirements then I would certainly consider shopping abroad.

Im looking into going to Ireland to get an ISH as Ive had 2 ISHs and they're temperament is fantastic and boy can they jump. The prices in UK for ISH's are rediculous.

I did go to Ireland to buy a horse, an Andalusian of all things, but then I do live in Northern Ireland so not sure I could really call it 'abroad'.

I would travel to the continent or to other parts of the UK if I found a special horse, especially with the transport company I found to bring horses over from England - would make importing from the continent very easy

It would depend really. I doubt I'll get to the standard of needing a 'serious' dressage horse, but if I did then I might look abroad (Germany, perhaps Spain)- after I'd looked in the UK first. If I had the money I'd love to look in at one of the Classical Sales Warendorf auctions.

One the other hand, if we were looking for an eventer for my sister then probably not (unless you count Ireland). We have plenty of cracking eventer-types here, why bother going abroad?

I usually go to Germany or France for my horses. I bought Magic, Toots and Banshee in Holland though.
In Germany the quality is so high and still the horse is a reasonable price.
