My Horse who is accident prone and into self harming in a big way was in his stable last night when i got to the yard instead of in the field where he should have been.

Somehow he had decided the grass was greener on the other side and gone over the electric fencing and then through the granite wall !!

He has take the skin off his thigh in a few places although no blood, he is a bit lame but I would say it's more stiffness and bruising as he was quite happy to gallop across the field when I put him back in ?

Have cleaned everyhing and applied wound powder just in case but as he seemed fine I didn't call the vet went up again tonight and he still racing around although still a bit stiff shall I just give him the rest of the week off and see how he goes or would yo ucall the vet ?

I'd just let him be, if hes not better in a week then yes, but if no gashes would be pointless really... would agree that it is just stiffness/bruising.. silly pony!

No, I'd just watch him for a few days and only call the vet if something worried me.
 
Nope...my horse regulaly comes in with cuts and grazes and they just cleaned and antibac applied...you wouldn't call the doctor if your child fell over and cut her knee so why so it for a horse? As long as your happy it's nothing major you just need to keep an eye on it...but then I'm a sinic when it comes to vets anyway :P
 
I'd leave him be and see how he is tomorrow. He'll be stiff I expect but there is no lameness or bleeding. I would however say I would definately not use wound powder. I was warned off this years ago by vets. It dries out the edges of a wound & inhibits the healing process. The wound should be kept moist so it starts to heal properly.

No i wouldnt call the vet.It sounds like a very minor injury.As long as your tetanus etc is up to date id just keep an eye on it and call if it changes for the worst.

Also main rule with wounds,they we had bet into us in collage, dont put or advise putting anything on them that you wouldnt mind putting in your own eye!
otherwise your just going to slow the healing process down and can do more harm than good.
 
Echo TZ. Wound powders are completely old hat these days. To heal properly, the wound needs to be clean but moist. Buy a good veterinary strength wound gel and stick it in your first aid box instead.
 
No, i wouldnt have called the vet either, just give him a few easy days and if after 3-4days he still appears stiff/lame then call the vet. You can give him a bit longer before worrying if you arent in a hurry to get back on.

As for the wound powder - please do not use these on wounds/grazes. As said above they dry out the wounds which inhiits/slows down healing. use a good wound cream like Flamazine as your first aid cream for minor wounds.

i was going to say exactly that ^^ wound powder may dry up too much need to keep moist - if its just scraped skin aloe vera gel good
