I came across this Italian horse rescue site and on having a nosey I found this little shetland. Do you think it is right to 'save' at all costs a pony in this condition, who also has ongoing problems (Cushings), or would it be better to put -to -sleep and save time, energy and finances to save a more 'savable' equine? All in all., they seem to be doing a good job as here in Italy you really are banging your head off a brick wall.

to be honest, no. i think that the poor little mite needs to be put down. i doubt that the poor thing will ever have 'correct' feet again, and they say themselves that she struggles to walk. in my opinion, a horse who cannot walk properly needs to be put down, in its best interests. horses are primerily flight animals, and once they lose the ability to move around pain-free and comfortably, then i think it's time to let them go.

I agree with you 100 per cent Jess. I believe that a horse should be able to walk with as little pain and discomfort as is possible. It must be hellish to be condemned to hirple about in pain for the rest of your life. Some people have a need to 'save' at all costs and dont seem to think about the quality of life they have 'donated' to the animal that they have supposedly 'saved'.

Oh lord above, no - this poor pony had reached it's time, the poor thing. When the feet are this bad, can they ever be corrected and pain free ? Not impressed. sm x

Why is it your username? Wondering cos its my mares comp name!
Wow, how did I manage that? I promise you, I made it up. What a strange coincidence. Did you name your mare and if so what was the reason behind the name? You've got me interested now!

In fairness it does say that that was her first walk after trimming, she's bound to be lame immediatly, however I doubt she will stay that way. She dosn't look too stressed.

it depends if she seems happy in herself

i've seen horses and ponies whose overall condition has been worse, then they make good recovery

I'd have saved it just to put it down if I'm honest.

Laminitis without that extent of physical exterior damage to that extent is painful enough to go through, let alone full blown like that. Whether she looks in pain or not, it would have been excruciating. I think very poor choice of a horse to put through saving and shall have a fairly poor unatural quality of life even after in management and care IMO.

Poor mite :(

No, but you would know that M.

How is the little Paolino these days?
Paolino has gone to my friends for the summer. He's keeping her mare company and is being ridden by her 7 year old daughter (lead rein for the mo). So far he's being a little star and seems to enjoy having his very own little girl. Doing him the world of good!

this was him about a month ago.Sadly he has sweet itch which I can't seem to do much about.
PS, I would have PTS and not put the pony through such physical trauma and pain. Its old and has Cushings, so what is the point?
