Just interested to know who has bought a horse from the Dragon Driving website, or who would consider buying from there? There are some lovely looking youngsters advertised that are going for silly money. Is this just because the majority are from the travelling community, or is there something wrong with these horses!!?

Yep! I've seen 2 that I REALLY wanted. Not because they were rescue cases or whatever, but actually because they looked fabulous and just my type. One was a Fjord and the other was a lovely big dark gray.

It wouldn't worry me where I bought a horse from, website, dealers etc.

You go and use your knowledge to make an informed decision regardless of whether the horse is a 15k neddy on the BD website or a £500 young cob on a low end website.

I am sure you will find wrong ones on every single website or dealer you visit.

But then again gems can be found too.

My colt was advertised on DD, but I didn't realise until I had bought him, as he was on Preloved too and that was the advert I saw. So I don't know if that counts. If I'd seen the DD ad I would still have gone to see him though :)

I have both bought & sold driving ponies on Dragon Driving over the years. Don't like many of the poor condition youngsters on there - but there are also some lovely genuine horses & sellers.

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't, If the horse is what they are looking for. How snobbish if people actually do that!

If you chose not to buy from there, I don't think it is snobbish, just your choice. I find some of the adverts sad to look at, but there are also some cracking youngsters on there for less than £500

Yes, although it wasn't actually my money, lol!
Friend was looking for a pony for her children. I saw an ad on DD. We went to look and found that the vendor was the daughter of the vendor of my and sis's 1st horse. Pony was sold from field, we tried her with a light weight (sis) and in traffic. Haggled a little, pony was cheap and sold from field.
Friend still has her, she looks after the 2 boys, is a bombproof hack alone/company, jumps and took mum along part of Pennine Way on a week's holiday last yr.
She was definitely a bargain!

I have a couple book-marked on the site for when I next have some spare money.

I can't understand the attitude of some people who seem to think that you get a better class of vendor on some other sites. IMO you need to have your wits about you when buying horses no matter where you get them from.

I totally agree. Especially after hearing horror stories about horses who have been bought from dodgy dealers for thousands.

I have 2 great cobs, purchased through the Dragon Driving website. It's a very good site imo, and, the same as any other site, you just sift through to find what you want.

Avoiding the website completely isn't snobbish no. But disregarding a horse that matches your requirements solely because it's advertised on there is, Especially if you would view that exact same horse had it been advertised on a different website! Thats just about the definition of snobbery!

What would you think if you saw a horse advertised elsewhere for £200 though - honestly?

What do you mean what would i think? What sort of horse? I bought my yearling for £290... I'd never even heard of dragondriving. Yes, I wondered if something was wrong. Happily it wasn't.

An older riding horse i'd be suspicious of where ever it was advertised. The name of the website would not add nor detract from this suspicion.

I haven't, but would if I was looking. It would be a step up for me, usually a low end sales type of person. And from the car park too sometimes. My pony came from the loot newspaper many years ago. Only expensive one I bought unadvertised. Who cares where their advertised?

i advertised my mare on there when i was selling her and got alot of interest.

But having just put my other thread up about a potential project bsja pony bargain for someone and been berated for having at go at the seller shows the mind set people are in when they think of DD. I couldnt care less about the rider in the photos, it was the horse I was directing people to

PMP - I don't care what you say about a rider. As long as you'd say the same thing where ever they chose to advertise their pony. That's the point - Dismissing things because of snobbery.

If, like me, you would laugh at your own child/other half for the same fashion mishap then fair enough.

Never heard of Dragondriving until a recent post. Having had a look there are, what appears to be, some very nice horses and unfortunately some that I pity but isn't that the same with any site??

There is a 13hh cob for stud that is really distressing as it is one of the most obese ponies I've seen.

I would buy from there if the horse was right, it wouldn't bother me at all if it came from the travelling community. I would not fuel the breeding cycle that produces rubbish unless I had a sudden rush to the head and was standing in front of something so pitiful that I just couldn't leave it.

I really like that Gelderlander X that is being sold by Tilly's owner but I don't have a vacancy for a horse at the moment.

yes! i bought a mini shetland foal from dragon driving owners were lovely! no issues very cheap . i would buy again from the site but just be careful that sight is just like going to a horse auction.

If I was buying again I'd look on there, as well as every other site. I'd have to be very careful not to be drawn into the "pity buying" thing though. There are some sad sights, and some right on my doorstep. But I do believe buying from neglectful dealers encourages them to trade. :(

Having said that, there are some lovely horses there too, so I wouldn't rule it out.

Despite the shocking adverts on DD, I have both bought and sold via the website, with excellent results. You just need to pick and choose with care.

I've seen some very nice coblets on there, so yes, potentially, I would.

I don't think demonising DD is fair. Some poor looking horses on other sites looking equally bad.

There are plenty of snakes with competition yards off loading 3 legged donkeys.

That's true. Plenty of people get ripped off by well-educated sellers who present the horse in a classy ad, with a good photo, but it's hiding a chronic problem, or is imported from the overseas meat trade. Yet in the ad the horse might look great and apparently very smart.

On DD you're more likely to see a less well-written ad with a photo of an ungroomed cob standing in what looks like a scrap yard, perhaps ridden bareback by a bare-headed youth in track suit bottoms.

It's snobbery to assume that the DD ad is the "dodgy" one! :)

Couldn't agree more.
I'm not a snob so don't see what's wrong with using cheaper sites if they have what I want. Yes, in a perfect world, a lot on DD wouldn't be with the homes they're in but then again, many are in good homes too; just because it's on a dearer site doesn't mean they're any better looked after or better types IMO.

I can think of a couple of passed 5 stage vetting, very expensive horses bought from "better" websites that turned out to have been completely knackered & that ended up being the subject of legal action. Both were pts within a 4 months of purchase after substantial vetinary treatment. Have also known of a horse from a dealer often recommended on HHO that turned out to be very wormy. So it's not only when looking at the likes of DD that you have to keep your wits about you & scepticism firmly engaged. I always say that even the worst dealer will have some satisfied customers & even the best will have have some dissatisfied. Same applies to websites.
