Would you hold a horse?

If you were selling a horse and you had a person come and view it who sounded genuine and very kind, if they were to put a deposit down would you hold the horse for them? For 14 days?

Why do you need to keep the horse for them? Is there some reason they can't get the horse vetted sooner? If the reason is reasonable (if you see what I mean), then yes I would wait for the buyer. However, if they just can't take the horse home before then I would expect them to buy the horse but maybe do them a deal on livery to help them out until then.

Yes I sort of did. He was vetted a week later & then full payment was transfered but he couldn't be collected for another 10 days. I must say though it was a very awkward situation, we were scared to death of doing anything with him incase he got injured as he technically wasn't our horse anymore!

I would but I would ask them to pay in full and insure him. Then if anything happened to the horse he belongs to them, not to you - you are just providing free keep for him.

I don't take deposits. Either they buy the horse and leave it with me until they can arrange to move it or they don't and it still belongs to me. I can't be bothered with all the nonsense that goes with deposits. If someone is interested in one of my horses and has arranged a vetting then I won't let anyone else come and see the horse in that time, however I don't want any deposits for doing that.

Well I did find myself holding a horse a few years back, without so much as a by your leave. But the purchaser
had paid in full, ( and it was a rather expensive horse at £10,000) - but she failed to pick him up for nearly 8 weeks,
regardless of my polite requests that she did so as soon as possible. Although I still had him insured I was very nervous that he might injure himself whilst still in my care, and the whole deal might go pear shaped.

It wasn't a livery place issue or anything, he was being taken to her home to live. I don't really know to this day just why she took so long to pick him up. Very bizarre altogether.

Last horse we bought, owners held her 3 weeks for us, we were due to go on holiday & wanted to be around whilst she settled into new home.
Didnt even ask us for a deposit.

Having posted a similar thread yesterday, I think it depends on circumstances. If you're sure the buyer is serious and it's the home you want the horse to go to, I don't see why not. If you have doubts on either of those, probably not.

I've got to admit, every horse I've bought has been held for a certain length of time while logistics of transport, livery etc are finalised. Shortest being a week, longest being 2. There was always a deposit left / offered, mind.
