Hi, following on from the horse scandal really, would you drink horse milk? It's quite popular practice in Europe and just wondered what everyone thought assuming appropriate health conditions and labelling of the milk!

Must admit that I can't recall that I've heard about that there was a part of Europe where it is a popular practice to drink horse milk before, don't know about health conditions or labelling horse milk either, however, I did know that there is humans that drinks horse milk (for example saw someone in Mongolia do it on TV), but there ends my knowledge on the subject.

Hypothetically though, if the horse is treated accordingly to that the milk should not contain any traces of medication, and the milk perhaps is pasteurised, then I don't see why it would be much different from the pasteurised cow milk products that is a usual part of my diet, and on rare occasions I've for example eaten goat cheese that was not pasteurised (by the way, it tasted gorgeous), so I suppose I could try horse milk too. I suspect it would feel a little weird at first though, if I knew that it was horse milk that I tried or if it tastes different than milk from cows.

By the way, I heard a not intended to be taken serious explanation to how Findus might have ended up with using horse meat from Bulgaria in their products...

The Swedish word for cow is ko,

the Bulgarian word for horse is KOH.

I used to help my local vet take care of her horses for a short period of time (when I say help I don't actually think I was really that much of a help :o) she had a mare and foal at the time and she and her 2 kids would enjoy a wee bit of mare's freshly "squeezed" milk :D I wasn't brave enough at the time but I probably would give it a go now :)

I dont drink much milk any way.

but im not totally against drinking it.

Although i am vegetarian so the though of what happened to the calf, foal, kid to be able to produce that milk isnt nice.

Sure, milk is milk.

I wouldn't buy it though, but if I had a mare that was lactating and I felt so inclined then yes I'd use the milk in the house. Just filter the bits of straw/hair out and away you go.

I drink goats milk every day. It doesn't make me ill like cows milk does.

Of course. As to having a herd of milking horses then not sure who makes more milk a dairy cow or a horse(am going to guess economically a cow is more productive as its been bred for that purpose).

But yes

Erm, no I don't think I would...not sure why the thought of it makes me feel a bit icky but it does...just like I wouldn't drink breast milk, pig milk or even try that Almond milk...how do you milk an almond anyway????

LMAO...

milking an almond.... thanks for cheering me up!!! :)

I have!

Visited a horse farm in the former Soviet Union - Russia to youngsters on HHO. Their operations were breeding Thoroughbreds for racing and a herd of Russian Heavy Drafts who were kept for milking.

The Russians used horse milk in tuberculosis hospitals. Tried it in two forms. Fresh is quite sweet, but it is usually drunk fermented and calle Kumiss. kumiss is vile!

The visit was organised by an equestrian journalist and some of my photos were used in her article in "Riding" magazine.

I have tasted mare's milk when checking whether a mare was ready to foal. It's the most reliable way of telling. So yes, I would drink horse milk.

Yep, lovely and sweet. In holland it is normal. Not to the extent that people buy it at the supermarket however loads of farms about mainly dutch and Belgian draft there. And I am just happy to see these horses have found a new job because there are less and less of them.
It is seen as very healthy, mainly for skin issues!

I'd give it a go. Isn't the Bashkir Curly used specifically for producing milk? I once read somewhere that horse milk is very similar in composition to human milk - don't know if that's true or not. I would wonder what would become of the foals, but then I drink cows' milk so ...

Meant to say that I've tried the almond milk also, it's like sweet, watery milk and just tastes like roasted almonds, I wouldn't buy it again. You can make your own, you just whizz up a bunch of almonds in a food processer with water then you squeeze the water out of the mush.

I ran out of cows milk once and we had a big old hefty cob with an equally hefty foal at foot, who does actually milk like a cow, so we took a mug load off her for our tea until we could get to the shops!!:D Wouldn't bother buying it though as we did taste it on it's own - tasted like sweet watery grass flavoured milk!!!:p Loads of animals are milked around the world it's just we have got used to cows, but folk drink goat, sheep, camel, buffalo, reindeer, yak so why not horse?!:D Am not sre how you milk an almond though either!!!:)
