.......if you had already gone way over your max with your final offer?

I know it sounds silly but where do you draw the line?

It seems such a petty amount to argue about but I am left feeling I have already gone above and beyond and I feel they are the ones who should give in at this point.

Why is $250 making it or breaking it for them too?

Hmm if you are over your max, it's the principle really. You set a limit and broke it already! How much do you want the horse and how much is this final price over your original budget?

If its beyond the asking price then they are taking the pee, if you really want the horse the money wouldnt bother me but if i was sure they were just chancing it i would argue the toss until they relented or come to a mutual agreement, some people just try it on is the horse worth it ?

I really think they are trying to break me at this point. I have been standing my ground well but feel like giving in now.

She has been with us (and is staying for the summer) and we have already become attached and know what she will mean to us to have. To me she is worth a million but that does not mean I will be taken advantage of.

I already went $500 over what I wanted to spend with my final offer.

what to do?

Your grey pony?

I could say bite the bullet (and prepare to take the consequences) stand your ground and say that's your final offer.

On the other hand....I am such a pushover, if the horse was worth it, and you already have it in your back yard, you could be looking for ages for another one to compare. Does she come with tack?

Nah, stick to your (already raised) limit. Good Luck. At least if they are bickering about money she isn't likely to find herself in the stockyards at the next sales.

Have you tried pointing out the them what it would cost to advertise her and keep her while they find a buyer if you don't take her? I'm sure it would be more than $250 and it might help crack them! If you feel that they're asking more than she's worth, try getting an independent valuation from a local trusted expert to back you up - careful it doesn't backfire on you though, they might tell you you're getting a bargain!

dubsie and annagan! I tried all of those angles already. grrrrrr! Hope he cracks

Enfys.... yes it is the grey. She is a litttle percheron welsh cross. No she does not come with tack (but I do not need any ...already have plenty that fits her well)

You are no help btw! LOL You are as confused as I am as to what I should do ! lol

MrsMozart...that is exactly what I am thinking! I will regret losing out on her. I think he knows that too

I will talk money for anyone interested. I may sound silly to you all though because horses here generally go for far less money than they do in the UK. Especially in this economy and horse market and you may find my petty amount we are talking about silly. Trust me when I tell you it is a big gap here atm though. People are giving horses away.

I have wanted this mare for 2 years now. She is as close to bombproof as you can get. She is an Amish horse who rides and drives. She has been hard used in her life but is very strong and sound. She is 16 and spent most of her life hitched to a wagon or plowing a field and has had numerous foalings. She was never idle but I see a lot of life left in her. She does have a popping cracky shoulder but never seems to have any problems with it at all.( I posted about that in vets here and got great feedback about it) I also feel she deserves a bit of a happy hacking retirement now and I want to give that to her.

He wants 2,000 for her and in my current horse market I feel that is high for her age. You cannot really put a price on saftey though and she makes me feel so at ease. I had confidence shaken recently and she has the ability to get that back for me (and has already...I am riding her down the roads and feel very at ease)

She and I would make a great team and my teenager loves riding her too.

If we strike a deal I plan on having a full vet exam for her before I give him any money. I am not anticipating a problem with a vetting though.

I offered him $1,000. he refused. ( knew he would) He said $2,000 . so I met him in the middle and said $1,500. Fair enough right? She is already here and he has no hassle of selling to deal with. He also knows she has a good home. In my economy he has no guarantee of seeling her at all right now.

He only came down to $1,750 and I have refused him.

I am trying to hold strong at the 1,500 on the advice of others.

am I silly to not just take her and be done with it? What is all this stress worth?

I have to remember that I need to stock up on hay too though and with her here I will need extra. $250 is half my hay budget for winter and it is a lot of money to me really to just toss at him if I can get him lower.

That is why I want to pay what I think is fair and just be done with it. grrrrr

I also know what it is worth to have the opportunity to have her live here for the summer to be sure about her...so am I the one who is being unreasonable? Is he the one being more than fair? Not many would say "Take her for the summer and try her out"

Of course then he knew I would get attached so he woudl have a larger bargaining chip

He seems to think she would fetch $3,000 at an Iowa auction in October. He may well be right but everyone says that in a sale situation don't they?

No guarantees for anyone in this economy.

Does he need to sell? Does he have any fondness for this mare? Can you, by hook or by crook, afford $250 and still pay for your hay?

I have to admit that I pay whatever for what I want, which considering my day job is rather interesting lol.

Yes I can afford the extra if I have to.

He does not need to sell her as far as I know. Two years ago he would not even considered it. His children have been driving her to school and he uses her on the plow. He admits he does not get the color from her babies that he is after and he knows she is getting older for what he does with her.
Money talks with the Amish though!

Whatever you have is worthless and whatever he has is worth a fortune you know

I know he needs the money though and he has about 30 head so I tink I may have a leg to stand on.

$1625? That's splitting the difference?

I think it is beyond a fair price for a horse of that type and age considering that you could pick up a similar Mennonite horse here for $600 in the stockyards. If he's expecting $3000 in the sales it sounds as if he wants to sell and doesn't have that much of a tie with her, he's tugging at heartstrings. God! I hate that

Still no help, sorry.

1500 sounds about right for it I would have said!

Well that's what I thought?

You never know what a horse like her is worth. I guess all it takes is the right buyer and the right tme with the right amount to spend.

To someone else she is worth nothing and to another she is priceless.
I think there are other factors to "value" though and I think knowing she is already settled in a good home where she is perfect for the owners ought to be worth something to him?

GAH! Now you have me thinking I am getting ripped off again!

I don't trust auctions though and I am thankful to have such a lengthy opportunity to try her out.

One never knows. I have seen well broke bombpoof older horses go very high at some auctions recently. He may get more with the right person with money to burn that adores her.

I adore her but do not fall into the "money to burn" category

With so many horses that are pasture onrnaments that nobody does anything with out there finding a nice bombproof one is not always easy

They are out there though and bargains are to be had! I just detest the whole looking part and always second guess my choices.
