Would you let a HHO member ride your horse?

BH was ridden by my friends very novicey OH today. I think it's good for him to do riding school pony duties from time to time! And the lovely fellow mucked out both my boxes. Which really was above and beyond because Nits is a pig! And BH has clearly been brushed which I never bother to do either! Totally worth lending him out if someone does the bog monster for me and cleans up my 'proper' horse :)

How big is your chap. Friend's OH is huge. 6'4'' or so. He makes BH look like a pony :eek:
I might have to send him with roller skates!

I do feel a mini meet up coming on though. I've been saying I'll go and visit dafthoss with acombined trip to Ingatestone for weeks now!

haha cob is little but he can handle the weight :p my brother rode him sometimes - also 6'4 and rugby player build - even if it does look a bit odd :p

Well it turns out dafthoss is very local to me - we could all go for a wee hack out :D
 
Ned's not mine, but his owned would allow others to have a go! Especially out on hacks. He's a star.
Speaking of which, does anyone want to come and ride with me? :D
 
Anybody can get on Markie in the school, as long as basic stearing and brakes are explained he's as good as gold. He's more than happy to step it up a gear for more experienced people, jumps well and does good, if basic lateral work. He will also do Western, I've been told, not tried it but he neck reins beautifully. I'm not precious about who gets on him, but, if he was uncomfortble they wouldn't stay on him long as I'd get them off! To hack out, he's bombproof, apart from cows and is very forward (pulls like a train at times), so not that good for novices.
A few people, from other forums, have been over here on holidays and ridden my old sec D and my friend's mare. Luckily, none of them have been lunatics!
 
There are several HHO'ers who I would happily let on mine, off the top of my head they are: Kerilli, Tarrsteps, Tabledancer, Spotted Cat, Hopalong, Kelpie, Princess Sparkle, NMT and Winklepoker. There are more but I can't think of them ATM!
 
My horse is pretty genuine and probably anyone on here could ride her.

I would let anyone have a shot *under supervision* - though I'd like to watch of course as she is a sensitive soul also and well... I am over protective.

People I know well and I trust could ride her anytime :)


There are also a LOT of people on here that I would love to see ride her and I also wish there was someone in Glasgow area braver than me that would be up for bigger competitions ;)


I was lucky enough to have a little ride on madhector's Jerry before he was retired. I'd give a horse to her to school in a heartbeat.

I agree with this. Captain is not nasty but he is very sensitive to aids and very sharp. He hates being ridden by other people. He is schooled, and understands all the aids and is quick to react to them, just maybe too much for a novice who is needing a more forgiving horse.He is certainly not willing to be kicked or a crop used.

Sadly for me, I suspect almost everyone here is a better rider than me. :(

I was a half-decent rider in my youth (honestly!), never into competing but fairly effective and I did my best to be sensitive and respectful. However, the 35 year gap and my now great age seemed to have turned me into a rubbish and scaredy-cat rider.

So as long as I was convinced the person was a good rider and would treat her kindly, I'd be delighted for a HHO member to ride Mollie. It would probably do both of us good for someone who isn't as nervous and useless as me to do some work with her.
 
I've ridden a HHOers pony and she's ridden mine (far better than I ride him I might add!) and would let others ride him as he is a pretty sensible chap who knows his job.

Given that the little cob managed to put said HHOer on the floor (how nice am I being here, no names lol) I'd prob think twice before slinging anyone up on him and would prob have to ride him myself if hacking or something - not that I'd be less likely to hit the deck, but still!!

That is extremely kind of you, though I feel honour-bound to point out at this juncture that despite being a product (mostly) of my own work, my horse makes me look like a much better rider than I really am, especially XC! ;)
 
not so much ride, but i'd love to meet Monty Knobberts, and Hovis! :p

I probably would let someone sit on the thug, but apart from me who would want to ride this ?! :confused::confused:

Just to clarify; since I was someone who said "it depends", I'm careful about who rides mine because she is only 4, but the people who ride her other than me are not particularly exceptional riders.

Both have never owned their own horse and have mainly ridden in riding schools. My sister is very rusty, she hasn't had proper lessons regularly for about 15 years, and only rides a couple of times a year. But I know that she will sit quietly and won't pull the horse about or be bothered if she messes about but will just continue to ask her to walk on quietly. I will let her ride in the school and hack but I know that she won't actually school my horse because she wouldn't have a clue where to start. I would actually rather have someone who is gentle and balanced but novicey ride her than someone who *thinks* they know what they are doing who might pull her about in an effort to "put her on the bit" or whatever.

The friend who has ridden her, and who i must get to come over again soon, I would let school her occasionally, and would also let her hack out. I know that she is a decent rider, who is gentle and kind. I also know that she has similar ideas to me.

I am grateful to all the people who let me have a sit on their horses when I didn't have my own so I would like to think I will be able to do the same in future. I also think it is a good skill for a horse to be able to adapt to different riders, and is essential if they are going to show at a decent level (not that mine is going to). You have got to think of your horse's best interests, at the end of the day no one can 100% guarantee a home for life and if a horse ever needs to be rehomed or even shared it is important that they can cope with different riders.

Since anyone with a pulse can probably ride better than me, Hovis would probably actually resemble a horse rather than a tank on 4 legs.
That said a few people have ridden him and asked in amazement how the hell i hold him as he's so strong. As hes the only horse i ride these days i suppose i don't notice anymore!
I'd really love to see someone who can really ride jump him properly for me. Theres so much power in that butt of his i'd love to see what hes really capable of when his mane clinging nervous wreck of a mother isn't on board!

Reminds me of a conversation I was having earlier this week....
Fellow livery was complaining that she couldn't go hunting (3rd season in a row) due to horse injury.
I blurted out "Oh you could take S". (S is getting bored and could do with a party to perk her up)
I instantly regretted it.
S has never been hunting, I've never seen livery ride (but is probably better than me). Letting her school / go on a hack is one thing but pony's first hunt is something I should have thought about before I blurted it out.
Problem is livery looked overjoyed and as if she might take me up on the offer.
I have since mentioned I think she needs her back looking at so at least I might have a get-out clause if it comes up again.

As an aside S is a saint and I gave 2 of the kiddies a ride up and down the track last week.
