Hi

As title says really. I only let certain people ride my horse, ( as he is still youngish) but was wondering really if people did the same?

no i have made that mistake before, i let a girl that said she was a fabulous rider have a go and they fell off him (not his fault at all) and injuried themself (also made a big scene)

my mare is only ridden by me and my RI and people i have seen on other horses, my gelding i will let friends ride but they go on the lunge until i am sure they are safe.

Captain is a difficult ride, we only let Elizabeth's instructor or our YO ride him.
Fany can be opinionated and strong, so she is ridden mostly by us too, Elizabeth's friend also rides her occassionally, but only in the school.

Bramble, my old pony, I used to know he'd be safe with anyone on him. So when my old YO asked if her daughter (who I'd never met before) could ride him I automatically said yes, only when she turned up she must have been 13-14st and this pony is a 14.1 NF! :O I didn't have the guts to say she was too big (I was only young at the time) and I felt so bad watching him struggle down the lane with her on. Lesson learnt! Make sure you know how big someone is before they turn up to ride!!!

My new one, Winston, I would let a few people ride, but he can get strong and he's not a plod so only people who could actually 'ride' if you get my drift! :D xx

One of my ponies I let potter about with little kids on now and again, only lead reiners though so it's really more of a donkey ride for them. And I am always present even if I am not the one actually leading. He's good at doing that and well behaved, he's ok with a competent rider too but if you get the in between sort of off the lead rein but not really competent he can be a little b*gger. So I only really let lead reiners on because then there is never the oh yes I can ride situation where person gets on only to show me they can't and then pony broncs them off and disappears off to the gate.

My old mare no-one rides but me. My best friend bought her to save her from going for meat and gave her to me to look after, she had a lot of issues (the pony not my friend!), and one of the stipulations of me having her was that no-one rode her only me. We wanted to get some kind of consistency back in her life and I really think it has helped as she has improved a lot since we got her.

Only two people ride H, my OH (who owns him) and me, and I can only think of one or two others I would trust and they already have their own horses.

I have seen far too many 'riders' (used in the loosest possible sense) who are terrified and obviously don't have a clue, riding other people's horses, I would not want H to have to go through that, although it might be quite amusing to watch him dump them on the floor

I'm happy to let most people have a sit on the Welsh Cob, I think he was a riding school pony in a previous live :) But I wouldn't want anyone else riding him on a regular basis

Not really my RI schools him quite a bit but other than that no one really as he is a sensitive soul and get worried easy! My very novicey OH will have a potter about on him and he is cool with that but he knows him and he only walks!

Depends on the horse!

I currently have one who I'd let pretty much anyone ride as she would cope with both weight and poor riding but would give an experienced rider a very enjoyable ride.

Most of the others have reasons why they are not anyone's ride.

Section A will be an angel for anyone from 18 months up to 8 stone, behaving either as a leadrein pony or capable of doing a nice test or jumping 2'6 courses and will go hunting on or off the lead. Anyone over 8 stone is liable to find themselves on the floor as she doesn't see why she should carry that weight - for a perfect child's pony she can be an opinionated madam when it comes to weight.

My other three are for selected riders only due to either their temperatment, behaviour or size.

No way! Only my oh and i ride our mares, and v rarely we ride each others. Only really if one of us is ill so they still need exercising. It has taken each of us ages and alot of work to get them to be the safe, responsive and lovely rides they are now. Alot of people on my yard also seem to ride with most of their weight through their hands - no way would I let someone with hands like that ride them!

only my instructor and my best mate would be allowed to ride mine. Everyone else i know either cant use their legs or nag constantly with their heels.

Absolutely, if I knew them. (Obviously wouldn't let a complete stranger on board). I am proud of the fact that a complete novice could get on either of them and be looked after, or a competent rider could get on and have a really fun ride.

No one would want to at the moment ;) I am happy for other people to ride my mare, but only people I think have the experience to sit quietly and are unlikely to end up on the floor. I like other people to ride my horses, so I can see them being worked properly from the floor :)

Yes, anyone who is a competent rider (and who isn't going to sue me if something happens) can have a pop on mine, she needs the exercise.

Anyone has can ride either of my two, though still young they are very safe but will also give a decent rider a good fun ride. Farra is the more laid back and nearly bombproof, and great for nervous novices. Stinky is a bit more sharp and fine for a confident adult novice, but is excellent with nervous kids, really looks after them.

I do however, for the first few times see how they ride. I don't mind novices, but I do object to anyone hauling their mouths or booting them - they are big chunky sorts, but extremely soft mouthed and responsive. People are told how they must be ridden, no racing ever, no fast work on hard ground and god help them if they don't obey my few golden rules. They are not the type to be upset by someone being a bit unbalanced or nervous.

The only horse I have had that I was very wary of letting people ride was Fleur, my WB mare. She could be a very difficult ride and was very sensitive and would rear if not ridden very tactfully.

Personally I take pride that my horses can be enjoyed by anyone and it also means that as is the case now, where I can't ride as much as I would like, I have a lot of kids and their mums riding them for me.

Sometimes, really depends on the person, but it's definatly not a regular thing, its more if there's someone I know is a decent rider and I want to see how she's working from the ground

No! I have let a couple of people in the past, but after he dumped my sister within meters of her getting on him (she, according to my dad, was supposed to be a good rider), I wouldnt now. He's a lovely boy, but can be unpredictable and unless you can feel him starting to freak then you have no chance. I just cant take the risk of people getting injured for the sake of 10 mins on his back. I've suffered enough and I know him.

If you ever intend to show it is quite a good idea if different people have ridden your horse.
Cuffey was once ridden by a male judge who sat with the old fashioned hunting seat and he looked most unhappy--needless to say well down the order

Another WH show, ridden by tiny elderly lady--I was scared! he is on-going but she loved him, galloped on both reins, reined back etc--he won that day

So really useful to have encountered different riding styles, but in the scheme of things he has not often been ridden by others except as part of Pony Club Tetrathlon teams when he was ridden clear XC by a Canadian girl at Floors and Moreton Morrell, she only sat on him a short time beforehand

I only let certain people ride my horses, as both are not novice rides. My TB i'm particularly funny about as he is very nervous and easily upset.

Whereas my welsh x is the complete opposite.. hes quite opinated and rude at times, therefore he needs someone who won't let him take the mickey. But if hes on the lead rope hes a total sweet heart and just plods along!

I don't really like other people riding my gelding, apart from my best friend who I have known for years and has her own horse I would never trust anyone to ride him unsupervised. I let an instructor sit on him during a lesson once and it was a disaster as he is quite sensitive. I am a bit precious about him but I do see that it can help to see how they go from the ground so a maybe certain people who I know well and have seen ride.
The tantrums he's throwing at the min I doubt any one else would want to get on.

It's wierd.....there are very few people who are 'riders' who I let on Zoom.....but I let my novice OH sit on her!

It's because she is very fizzy, but VERY scared of her mouth. People who think they can ride often tense up and balance with their hands on her. This causes all sorts of nutty behaviour as she gets away from the pressure. OH on the other hand is cocky as hell (horse riding is SOOOOO easy ) so sits like a sack of potatoes. This means Zoom walks round on a long rein like an angel.

She is very good at identifying riding flaws that you can't normally see as she is SO sensitive.

I dare say that Bailey would behave impeccably with any rider on board, he's a gent, but would I want just anyone on him, pulling him about & sitting like a sack of spuds? No, definately not, I think it would be taking advantage of his good nature.
He's a forward going ride, definately not a plod despite being quite a well built chap but out hacking you won't find anything braver so he's very safe (without being a robot of course - there's always that chance even with the best of them). Schooling can be a different matter if he's feeling that way out & he can throw a doozie of a temper tantrum!
Regular riders are me, my eldest niece & RI. Occasionally my younger niece has ridden him (she's far better than I am!) but he's probably a bit too big for her to be honest tho she does a good job of it!
In the past I have let 2 of my non-rider friends on him but they literally walked round the block & I was at their side at all times, no trotting etc.

I wont just let anyone ride my gypsy cob. Not because he is not safe but because heavy cobs are so easy to make lazy and dead to leg. Novicey friends and hubby actually make my horsey really laid back and its not a habit I want to encourage. Plus the way I ride him is very much the western style with a light contact and so many people take up to much contact with a cob and then they learn to lean. I have long legs so try to ride him mostly off the leg. I notice most novices ride off the reins, and the safer the horse the more they do it!

I let my Oh have a potter on her the other day and she was very well behaved so I'd let him ride her again
My instructor rides her. I don't have the most time to ride during the week and she's a great rider so it works.

If people ask, I'd usually let them have a sit if I knew they were good enough.

Yes... if they can ride ...I like the way they ride and I like them LOL

Ted is easy but can be sensetive .. its taken me a long time to get him as good as he is now.
Tilly Noone wants to ride anyway she is nuts lol

I like people to ride my chap. Within reason, I know they are all capable riders. He is rising five and a star! But, as a show horse, he needs to be used to lots of different riders, as most judges will not ride him as I do. It's nice, as he has develeped into a well mannered chap.
