Would you let her just get on with it?

My TB mare who has been in hospital and been ill most of last year seems to have developed a personality disorder.
She is turned out with 4 other mares - they all get on great. However when one of the mares is brought in - doesn't matter which one it is, she goes mad. Even though she still has the others out with her. Running up and down the fence, bucking and farting, then round in circles, so that eventually, if I am not there, someone goes and get her in. It's going to be a problem in summer when everyone is bringing in at different times. I mentioned it to my very laid back vet who is very experienced with horses and has a few horses of her own. She said just to let her get on with it and she will get over it, but I have images of injuries in my mind, although she never seems like she is going to come through the fence. Have any of you experienced anything similar and what would you do? I have to point out that when I put her out in the mornings, she is absolutely fine - doesn't matter which one she goes out with as we all tend to put out at different times. She doesn't wait for the others, she just goes off with whoever goes out with her! I've heard of not wanting to be left in the field on her own, but to do this when there are two or three others grazing quietly is making me a bit nervous! Blummin' mare!!

Mine used to be a bit like that. I just let her get on with it and she's totally over it now. If the horse is bought in it's just getting what it wants and is being rewarded for that crappy behaviour. If you're worried about your horse hurting itself, I'd just put turnout boots on. Good Luck!!!

A mare at our yard also does this. She is very very attached to another mare and if the other mare is taken out of the field she goes crazy even though there is another mare in with her and another 4 horses in the field next to her. We all leave her to it as she does eventually calm down. Funny enough all the other horses seem to ignore her when she starts to do this!

Thanks Jadey - that's what I was thinking. She wears boots on her front legs for turnout anyway. It's good to hear from someone who has had the same experience. I don't want to put a note on the board saying to leave her out if she farts about just incase it does get dangerous, but I just wish the others would leave her for longer than 5 minutes. She can't wait to get out in a morning - kicking the door and weaving, and then wants in as soon as one of the others comes in! I can't win either way!!

Try putting her on a calmer for a while. I was using the global herbs fireworks one for my stressy gelding. He's a different horse on it to the extent that I can actually hack him - previous to using it I'd have to fight him every few yards.

Yes, all the others do ignore her - they stand and just carry on eating!! I'll let her get on with it - I don't want her injured, but it can't go on all summer, expecting other people to keep getting her in all the time!
