a supposed* grade A mare, 15 years old, TB x ID but no recorded breeding and the owner (a friend) thinks she's a maiden. My colt is only 2 and he is fertile, I have covered one of my own mares with him (in hand) and she's been scanned in foal with heartbeat. I wasn't standing him at stud this year, just wanted to use him on my own but the owner of this mare is a friend and I don't think it'd bother cal too much to cover another (was v sensible last time). Is it a bit risky to use him on this mare? I'm hoping he'll be graded next year and aim to do the BSJA age classes the year after.

*I say supposed Grade A because who's to say the printout she got with the mare is genuine? Or am I being too suspicious?

Does it matter if she's grade A or not? If she's a nice mare, nicely put together etc. with a nice temperament - why not?

However, if she's maiden possibly not.

the maiden bit isn't so much of a problem as I could have her ai'ed as we have an ai techie on the yard. I haven't actually seen this mare so no idea what she's like and if I didn't like her how do I say to my friend sorry I'm not taking her?

I suppose it depends on how much you want to get some progeny on the ground.

My impression is that most studs will let their stallions cover anything as long as they get paid.......

I would ask to see the mare, so you can check out it's confirmation and movement. If you don't think it would produce something good with your stallion then say no. We are very picky about what horses are put with our stallion as we only want good stock being produced. I wouldn't worry about anything else and just nicely say to your friend that as your young boy is going to be graded you want to start off on the right footing. As this is your business I don't see that she would have a problem with it. She shouldn't really have any problems with you having a look over her mare either.
