I am currently at a yard close to home which has excellent hacking but no school. It also has no proper fencing just electric which we have to move ourselves and a significant lack of grazing. We have no water troughs and put buckets in the field each night.
I have been offered a space on a yard 5 miles away, proper fencing, water troughs and a gorgous school however hacking is restricted. There is one or two routes only however I am thinking that i would school more. I do love my hacking though.

What does anyone else think, my horse is a porker and very unfit as I did not ride much all winter due lack of school and due light could only hack weekends and that was 30mins max. Hopwever summer will hack allo voer the place if I have compnay.

If the horses welfare isn't compromised at the current yard, I wouldn't move. I couldn't survive without decent hacking!

I'd move - but then I only hack if accompanied and desperately need to school / Pessoa my hore to get fitness levels up!

where i am now doesn't have a proper school. We have a fenced off paddock which we use for schooling but can only use it when it is dry enough. The hacking is good and we also have taped off fields with buckets for water but the horses are happy and have ample turnout and grazing. Where I was before had a fantastic school and great hacking but turnout was very limited as we weren't allowed to turn out if it was wet at all which meant the horses spent alot of time being kept in. To me my horses welfare is important and his happiness comes first. Hence why I have given up a great school.

Hacking is better for fittening, and lack of good grazing sounds like a bonus in your situation so I would stay.

I'm on a yard which doesn't have post and rail fencing, doesn't rotate fields, no school, no electricity, but we are allowed to keep our horses out 24/7/365. Phil stresses in a stable so there was no way I would compromise his happiness just so I could ride in a school.

Go with your heart :)

I wouldn't move to a yard that didn't have good hacking - so would stay put until the right yard became availabl.e

I have only ever been to one yard with brilliant facilities - it was the worst yard I've ever been to! At my current yard we have a very small school but brilliant hacking so it really makes up for it - I couldn't be at a yard without good hacking.
At the end of the day it's about what's best for you and your horse. A school may seem like a great idea but would soon get boring if you were used to great hacking I think.

It depends what you need doesn't it. We moved to our current yard because the school was a little larger & the surface was very much better. We have a couple of showjumpers & we need to school them regularly & when we jump them we need a quality surface to take off & land on to protect their legs.

As it happens the hacking at the new yard is better anyway so we won all round but primarily it was the school that drew us to the new yard. You have to decide what you want out of a yard & then decide accordingly. ;)

i wouldn't move to the yard in question but i would look for another yard.

i wouldn't give up good hacking for a school.

i spent months looking for a new year with great hacking and good facilities and levels of horse care- imo it is worth the extra expense and travel.

Its so hard isn't it? Try to draw up a list of the pros and cons for each place - that's what I've been doing :)

Good hacking is more important to me than a school. My current yard has great hacking, no school, but also no-one to ride with so that's my biggest issue. I also have to lug water up to my field as there is no water supply.

If you have doubts about the new place it prob isn't going to be quite right...

The distance wouldn't worry me if someone was living on-site and could possibly turn your horse out for you occasionally in case you couldn't get there due to illness/car breaking down etc.

If you're not sure, keep looking - there's no point moving somewhere not right, as you'll only have to move again.

Good luck :)

Personally I'd move - but hacking isn't a massive part of my riding! Besides, if you miss your hacking so much then every couple of weekends couldn't you just hack further out maybe? If that makes sense! For me, the grazing would be an issue, so I'd want to move to a yard with better grazing! xx

Why not stay at your current yard over summer but look for somewhere more suitable for the winter.

Electric fence that you move yourself sounds a fairly good option for a horse who puts on weight as you can control his grazing and while water buckets instead of a trough are not ideal but as long as they are checked twice and day and you have several of them, it is not impossible.

You can take advantage of the hacking over the summer but look for somewhere with a school so you get more riding next winter.
