Please help Im in a real dilemma. Ive never been at livery before but since we sold our house I have been staying at a friends yard. Its a fair drive but is very relaxed and my horses seem fairly contented, however there are absolutely no facilities. The water has to be bucketed from a tap, the muck heap is like mount everest and constantly smoking and there is only a slippery and very uneven muddy paddock to ride in.

However my friend is great company and we cover each others holidays etc.

Im pretty laid back and the dilemma has really arisen since I bought a very green baby. He cannot balance in the paddock at all and trotting a single 20m circle is precarious. Id like to get him cantering but even on the lunge he falls over on the uneven surface so I darent risk it. I think that I wont get anywhere without an arena surface.

What would you do?

I'm in a similar dilemma as you at the moment. Like the people at the yard where I am but the fields are horrendous so my horse can't go out the school isn't the best and is dangerous where the membrane has come up.

If it helps I'm going to move for the better facilities. I figured I need to be somewhere my horse and I are happy and can develop. Keeping fingers crossed I will make friends at the new place.

If you stay you might end up resenting the place and how it will hold you back.
 
What is the hacking like? I am assuming you are riding the youngster? I like to get mine going, canter wise, on hacks, then after a couple of months intro it into the school, by which time the paddock should be drier.

I think that it is worth its weight in gold to be happy with where your horse is stabled

Hacking is great - in the summer! At the mo it is severely rutted where the tractors have been over and over it.

I think I am starting to get a tad cross with everything and really dont want that. Perhaps a temporary move to better facilities might help just to get us going.
 
i am in a very similar position to you!

i am at a yard with fantastic hacking, great turnout and the people are lovely but no facilities to ride.

its ok in summer as i can school in the field but the winter is a nightmare.

hence we are moving them next month to a place with better riding facilities.
i have youngsters as well and at the moment they are very expensive pets as i cannot do anything with them!
i will be paying more in livery but will be getting much more in return for my money.
 
If you like where you are other than the issue re the school could you hire an arena nearby from time to time and ride, lead or box there? Seems a shame to uproot you and your horse if everything else works for you both.
 
probably no, I wouldnt move, theres a lot to be said for good company, (often wish my friends lived closer to me), I would box him up and rent an indoor school somewhere, that way he gets used to travelling, and will be more relaxed when out competiting, if hes used to being out and about!
