16.1hh bay gelding, 7yo, recently raced (sold from racing yard), stopped racing as not trying anymore, had enough of racing, nothing wrong with him. £1500.
Personally no I wouldnt pay no more than 500 quid however sane or good a horse was that has just come off the racetrack - you can get them for nowt off most yards!!
Even if he was sweet and bombproof - I wouldnt pay 1500 not even with tack - haggle to a grand maybe if you really like him? xxx
Depends on the horse, if he safe, sane and sensible and just needs some reschooling, then yes. But you can pick up ex-racers for free from a lot of trainers, or for less than £1000 - so there would have to be something extra there.
i paid £500 for my ex racer and im glad i only paid that as when she became fit and well she tried to kill me 3 times and had to be shipped off to re-habilitation.

Those must be the really crap quality TB's !!
If its good looking with good bone, and good substance, never had any injuries, well mannered, then £1500 is good.
If its had injuries, if its a weedy little thing, badly put together, then yes a few hundred £ !
Well, PF is having a break from jumping now until the babeeee arrives
and no one except YO is around when I'm jumping A (and he's busy yelling at me!) UncleJr is coming for a show next week. I'll try and get him to take pics
I would never pay 1500 for and ex racer full stop - not saying that you shouldnt mind - I couldnt care less about temprement or breeding but I think its because I couldnt be bothered with the amount of work Id' have to put into one and I am no way experienced enough to do so.
In the current economy - you can get a really good allrounder for 2.5 so in looking at it like that 1.5 grand aint so cheap - if its ok its should be up for 800 quid at most - and if its from the yard I doubt it will come with any tack.
If you want, it go for it but a good way of looking at it is 'Am I buying it because I like it or because its cheap?' if its because you like it, get it but if its because its cheap - just leave it.

yes mine was 11 when i bought him for £1500. Was broken at eight, raced six times and turned away. needed rebreaking but had a lovely temperemant and good conformation. was sold for £3750 as a thirteen year old due to his excellent jump.
Probably not, as you can get them for much cheaper if you know the right person.
However, if the horse was sound and exceptional in conformation and attitude, and really had something about it, then I may do. Would prefer younger than 7 though.
Oh and I just spend £2500 on a racer... although I was told he hadn't raced since last Ocboter acording to racepost he actutaly hasn't raced since october 2006. He's very well breed and even when he was retired after making a useless, slow racer, he went for £3500 at auction. The way I see it there alot easier then a 3YO* and I'll be laughing when we're competing agianest my mates who have spent 10K plus. They really can be cracking horses.
* in training he would of been ridden out alot, so already used to traffic etc. At the races they see and hear alot. I've never seen him spook. They are used to traveling, vets, farrier, teeth etc. They are forward thinkings and mine has better breaking then most my friends horses. He is pretty established pace wise, he sorts him self out, balanced, takes off on the right legs etc unlike babies.
I bougt my mare last year as a 4 year old who had only raced for £1500, with no tack or rugs, she had rainscald and has a massive scar on her shoulder so she can't be shown. And she naps. She was last in ever single race too.. Amazing dressage prospect though..
They did however want £2500 because of her confirmation, and she is very pretty, has a nice presence.
I refused to pay £2.5k for her. She is probibly worth about 3kish now.
I would pay £1500 for an ex racer if it was well put together and had a good temperament, even though the last two I have had have been freebies! Realistically, what else could you get that has been out and about and seen a bit of life at 7 years old and that didn't have any sort of issues for that sort of money. Go for it if you like him!
If it is just off the track consider costs of turning it away for a while then restarting it in winter etc etc.
In this kind of market horses are going really cheap and you can get a more established horse that you can get on and ride now.
And lots of racehorse charities rehome ex-racers - if I had my heart set on an ex-racer I would probably go there first and see if I could give one of those horses a good home.
what I want to know is where I can get one for pennies or free - there does seem to be a lot of ex racers on horsemart at the moment but I would imagine that is because Tatts was this week....if anybody has any contacts regarding racing yards pm me please
