Just wondering people's opinions. Below is very sketchy as I don't want to give anything away.

Given your yard instructions of something that needed to be done, and they didn't do it... consequence of which it cost you (quite a bit of) money. This money had to be paid by you directly, would you hope yard would offer some kind of recompense?
 
Do you mean "the yard" were expected to do something that was their responsibility or something that was your request? A bit more detail might help people to decide.
 
I wont say too much, but it wasnt some small request like "put freddie's pink rug on tonight"; it was to do with the horses' health.
 
If you are saying that you had asked the yard to do something specific in the care of your horse, they failed to do it and it resulted in say a vets bill because of their lack of care then it would depend on what type of livery service you are on and if you thought it important enough to give them written instructions so there was no "he said, she said" type situation arising.

Difficult if this is the scenario. I'd be pretty peed off but as to getting them to accept responsibility not sure if your instructions are open to doubt/question in any way.
 
If it was a written agreed intstruction or they had always done the task but forgot one time then yes I would expect some sort of recompense or at least some remorse and a lesson learned the hard way
 
Depends on the situation totally
Friend was at a livery yard. pony stepped on a spike for electric fencing that was loose in field. large vet bill. They highlighted this after finding more in field. That to me is livery responsibility, as to maintain horses safety. As said, if the pony had died, their insurance would be chasing yards insurance for payout.
The yard has a level of care that they must uphold.
If it is something that they could see needed doing once pointed out, it is their duty to fulfil it. If it caused a vet bill, your insurance could well seek to claim against theirs.
If it is please limit grazing, please dont put horse out after fertalizing until it washes in, and horse gets ill, again their responsibility.
If its something like my horse rushes through gates, please can you change the catches, and you have a ripped rug, no chance. Up to you to educate your horse to walk through safely.
All depends on what needed doing, and what was caused that cost money.

Ok, so sounds like you booked the dentist. Horse wasn't in as per instructions. You've been charged.

As annoying as it is, I wouldn't expect the YO to pay this bill.
 
Too many variables to offer a yes or no answer.

What sort of livery is the horse on? Is there a contract? Can the cost incurred be directly attributed to the YO's actions? Etc...

Along these lines, however it was a whole lot more than a dentist's bill!
 
I do think if you want opinions more info is needed really

I was thinking along the lines of you said not to feed x they did feed x and it caused colic or something
