Thanks for the many people who responded to the post below with a resounding "TELL HIM TO SHOVE IT".

I printed off the thread and showed it to my very lovely (but very soft!) friend.
Delighted to report that he contacted his insurance company (we all have to have third party insurance over here) who have said they will send a form for him to fill in and they will handle it from now on. Their main concern was that if friend paid for glasses he was admitting liabiliy and there was nothing to stop trainer coming back in 6 months saying "now I need a nose job for the damage to my nose" etc etc
Form has been duly handed over with a "fill in and send to Insurance company and they will handle from now on"
Very very proud of the great big girls blouse
