would you plait up and leave over night?

It depends if you're horse scratches theirself in their stable or you think they'll scratch them out. Sometimes if I didn't have time to plait before a hunt meet I left plaits in overnight.

Depends. I plait "down" and leave overnight, sometimes with a hood or a neck cover on, but feel its too risky to plait up properly as if the horse does itch then there is more damage to the mane than if the plaits were down. I also think it wastes more time than it saves cuz of picking bits of bedding etc out and re-doing any balls. So down- yes! but wouldnt plait up properly..
oops...essay!

I plaited up my sweet itch suffering horse the night before, put her Boett on, took off in the morning and I was dead impressed they were still in and looking good. I left her rug off after that went home to get horsebox and in the time I had gone she'd had a good itch. I did put tights over every ball of the plait overnight also

I wouldn't, IMO they are far too uncomfortable to be left in for longer than necessary

... which I would assume is why so many horses try rubbing them out overnight!

I have in the past, full rolled up with a old pair of tights over them. But i would not with the horses i have now, i wouldnt trust them not to rub them. Not so much for fear of them rubbing causing mane to fall out, more the fact that in the morning they would all need re-doing anyway/ or spending ages picking shavings ect out of them!

Id just do them in the morning, but depends on your horse.

Yes i do, any of mine that need plaiting get done the night before except for the forelock which only gets plaited down.

Have done and will do if an early start, put wet wipes over each plait to keep moist and then cut up bit of plastic bag and band to keep them in place!!!I HATE plaiting at the best of times, let alone 5am in the morn when you are in a rush!!!

I never do and i dont allow my groom to do it either.
You only have to have long hair yourself and have it tied up tight and know how uncomfortable it can be.
For me it would not encourage freedom and relaxation in the neck, or for that matter stretching.

ok, so when you have no groom

you see and have to get up at 5am to warm up, compete at 8am, you cannot possibly plait too!!!

If I did I would be stressing, am I on time I only have 10 mins to go etc... , so I have plaited the night before, albeit 9pm, had a good nights kip and got up ready to go!! Luckily for my boy my plaits are not tooo tight, secure, not the best in the world, but I am not tooo stressed or pooped thinking I have to get up at 4am to plait!!!

In the days when i was a groom i used to get 4 ready for hunting and still did it in the morning.

It is each to his own and you did ask!!

you could always try hogging!!! i often threaten the Spanish 'boys' with that one!

If I have early times then yes, I'll plait night before.
Will try and plait on the day if poss but it's not always poss, particularly when your horse is a fidget bum that requires holding when she gets bored!

Yes I do, but I leave the forelock to the morning incase they scratch it out. The always look fine the next day and that is using bands as well

I see your reasoning but if that were so surely every person who wears their hair up in a bun or a pony tail would suffer too!
A correctly plaited mane should not impede the horse's stretching ability, if it does, it's too tight....
If we stuck to plaiting on the day we often would have to get up at 4am to plait two horses and one is calmer in the evenings.. trying to plait a dancing stallion in the early hours doesn't bear thinking about, especially when you have a sometimes three hour drive to and from an event.
Sometimes it just isn't practical, of course on the day looks and probably feels better, but if it means no sleep the night before by a 4 am start, tough.. they get plaited the evening previously...

Can't help but grin at your description of telling your groom she is not to plait the night before, if you have a 6 am start do you stay in bed whilst she plaits then? (not being bitchy just a genuine question? I do whilst CCj plaits...

If its an early start the next day then I usually plait the night before but roll them up the next morning. That way if any get a bit rubbed in the night, I can just re-plait them really quickly before rolling. They look a little fuzzier than freshly done plaits but I value my sleep!

Yep, sorry my nights kip comes before my horses plaits!! We may not have the best plaits but at least I can focus!! Maybe I should try and get my hubby to learn to plait... ummm... now thats a thought!!!!

I always do it the night before. Gen doesnt seem to mind them as he never scratches/rubs them. Also he is so mad the day of the comp with nervous energy you would never be able to plait him. Oh and it takes me ages as I have arthritis in my hands and it can get very very painful in the cold morning.

As you see from many of the posts lots of horses rub their manes out when plaited this can only indicate some kind of irritation. IMHO. and just because i have a groom it does not exclude me from having an opinion on this one.

What it means is that as i drive the lorry, ride the horses and sort out the other 22 + inmates on the yard we all get up early to make sure that we go to the competition with my horses turned out correctly and comforably.

I must admit that i think dressage is a little less demanding than eventing on this one and my yard is situated within 2hours of most major uk venues. I also dont usually have to do the first classes. I do understand its just my feelings on it.
And after all i am a dressage diva so what else would you expect???

No. I've got long hair & if I plait it & get a strand too tight, it jolly hurts & gives me a headache. Their hair may not have such sensitive nerves, but I still feel uncomfortable just thinking about it. I love taking my horse's plaits out & giving his crest a rub.

I will with my gelding if it's an early start, as he doesn't rub them out. Tend to leave the thread long on the mane plaits though so if by change he did rub them, then I can quickly re-do them. I try not too though.

No I plait up in the morning, but I can plait quite fast and I am a perfectionist, if a plait does not look right, and there is always one it is replaited until I am happy with it. If I plaited up the night before however well wrapped they were there would still be a ton of shavings to remove - she burrows!!

I nearly always do unless my times are in the afternoon. I don't roll though just plait an dthen roll in the morning. There is nothing worse than a fidgety horse and nervous rider trying to plait, just ends in tears!

Hi
No I wouldn't, I think it is because my horse Dutchie always got excited when I plaited up so it would be too stressful for him, plus they are likely to get a bit rubbed overnight. I'd rather get up earlier!

On a hunting yard I use to be on we always plaited the night before 79 horses non ever rubbed only one had a neck cover & that was purley because he was grey to avoid the stains.
On another hunt yard had 20 horse & 2 of us use to plait up in the morning.
Show jump yard use to have me do them in the lorry on way to the shows now that was interesting!!
Each yard to their own rules. I do prefer to do in the morning though personally & will get up before dawn if needs be!!

With my boy I would never plait, bath or anything the night before, as he is the most disgusting pig that ever walked the earth and it would be pointless as the whole lot would have to be redone in the morning!

I couldnt contemplate plaiting on the day unless I was not on until at least after lunch, I just get too flappy. Derek is really good and doesnt rub but he does get hay seed and shavings but I found using my lycra hoody made the plaits stay in fantastically and smooths the spiky hairs that I dont want to pull out. Also my plaits are not tight in the slightest so I know he isnt bothered by them.
