A clip has pierced the sole due to a wedged lose shoe. Farrier told me to poultice it. I have done but horse is very unsettled as hates being stabled and is use to being out 24/7 even in bad weather. He is currently box walking (limping) round and won't eat.

I remember once years ago when i had my previous horse a similar thing happened and my previous farrier said just leave the horse out and put purple spray on.

I have never polticed before so i hope i got it right - cleaned foot, hot poultice on and vetwrap over.

Would you poultice or get him back out where he is settled? He is currently in with a poultice on but am in two minds whether to go back down and turn him out.

Can u not turn him out with the poultice on? Mine live out & one has had a poultice on for the past 2 weeks. Just gaffa tape over the vet wrap. I also bought one of those canvas poultice boots to go over that. It all stayed on fine :)

Clean hoof, animalintex (hot but not too hot ;) and squeeze out excess water), then a baby nappy, then half a roll of vet wrap and finally lots of gaffer/duct tape.

Then if ground is OK, turn him out.

I could get a poultice to stay on for 12 hours easily using the above method.

I wind then do extra strips over the toe area. With all the padding that I use, I've not had a tightening problem. I do make sure that the Vet wrap isn't pulled too tight as well.

I'm so glad everyone else turns out with poultices on, I thought I was the only one!! :)

I tend not to give bute if they're going out because if they can feel it they're less likely to go haring round, but maybe I'm a bit cruel!

Another vote for faracats way. I went so far as to save a few nappies of each size, for different size hooves whenever daughter moved to next size up as a baby.

Oh no, I have only just read these replies and now my yard is shut and locked up :-( damn! I have left him in with poulice on...will go up extra early and let him out - silly question but where do i get duct tape from? Will pop to chemist for nappies.

Local supermarket will probably be cheapest for nappies. The cheapest when i needed some have very cute frogs on them haha.

You will be able to get duct tape from any hardware store =)
