Would you put a weaned colt with a 4 years old unshod gelding?

Hi! In my opinion it's great you have this youngster handy and that he might be suitable! When you posted some time ago I thought there was no way he could have a compnay at all. Although in an ideal life I would say the stud environment was best, if it isn't possible then you just need to work with what you have. Weaning him at home could have a big advantage which is avoiding an abrubt separation and keeping Troy in touch with Hannah (which some believe is good). I saw it being done in riding schools with no proper breeding facilities and it wasn't such a big deal. In one case the mare was stabled next to her filly and the weaning went beautifully, they didn't cry for each other at all, didn't pace the stables and seemed very relax about it all.
Ups, got carried away

In short, I would think if the gelding is quiet but playful it should work. Could you walk the gelding to the stable door while Hannah is out being groomed (or worked) so Troy can say hello to a new friend? Blow into his nostrils etc?

All the best, I reckon it's great news you have a possible companion!

Hi Hannah, Look I dont want to worry you but young colts play a lot harder than a 4yr old gelding. If you can hang on till Sept /Oct I will also be weaning my colt, believe me they are far better kept with a similar age group & same sex, My 2 x 2yr olds Colts do nothing but jump on each others heads all day long. they have bite marks all over them but the truth is they are both as bad as each other. Now a 4yr old gelding is likely to just tell him to sod off in no uncertain terms. I personally would not risk it, not after all the time trouble & effort you have put in. Just hang on in there, he has got all the time in the world to grow up without Mum. I could imagine it being more important if you had put the mare back in foal, presuming this is not the case dont do anything drastic. Even if we havent moved local to you at weaning he can always come over here for a while. I can assure you of the very best of care. (exactly the same as my newly weaned colt) with daily turn out & a large barn/stable together if necessary. Dont worry.

What would be the best way though, would it be to bring Hannah and Troy to you or wean them at home and then travel him up there with no partition and on a bedding? He has travelled before with hannah, although it was just down to the vets for his little operation
