I feel a bit miserly, but I have just received Ellie's vets bill for when she was attacked by a dog last month. It's £120 which is fine, but on the bill is Orbenin Eye Ointment for a sum of £5.60.

The vet cleaned her wounds with my hibiscrub, gave her a couple of injections, left bute and antibiotics with us but never put anything else on her.

Should I query the bill for the sake of £5.60 or leave it?

Am I being petty and tight?

I would, I queried a bill a little while back and they had charged me for something they didn't use! It's not petty you shouldn't have to pay for something that wasn't used.

Yes, I would. My vet charged me over £100 to come out to a horse that was dog lame (could barely walk) to tell me there was nothing wrong with it, and that she was "acting out". Less than 12 hrs later my farrier dug two abcesses out of her near fore, that the vet had looked at the night before. I refused to pay the bill, and said I never wanted that vet near my horse again.

I know its slightly different, but I would always question discrepencies.

Definitely ask about it. I have in the past & they have always been very nice about. Things do occasionally get put on the wrong bill. However I was also very honest & when something major was missed off the bill I did ring up & tell them, as I like my vets so much I couldn't live with my conscience of not paying for it!!

I would, when mum's vet came up to do some jabs she asked the vet to pop her head over the door and check a pony the vet had seen last week, she actually didn't cos they got chatting and when the bill came through there was a £39 consultancy fee on there.

Anyway mum queried it and it was taken off.

Always worth a try as things are so expensive these days, better in your pocket than their's.

I do that all the time as while my vet is great the billing dept is less so

I had a visit for the horse in the stable next to mine turn up on my bill - it wasn't much just antibiotics and other supplies but still.
And I've just come off the phone from them asking why they have added another admin fee when they already charged it and had it paid.
This was after I got a phone call chasing me for payment for a bill they hadn't sent me yet.

The last vet I used added on vaccinations which I didn't have. Some vets seem to employ village idiots in their billing section. Do query it. It might only be £5.60, but it's YOURS!!! That's at least 5 choccie bars PLUS a couple of portions of chips. Don't deny yourself!

ha, i'm the only one then that wouldn't query it?...

i'm such a wuss bag. i went out for a meal with my husband for the first time in years the other day... and the waitress brought me the wrong food... not only that, but it was smothered in MUSHROOM sauce (my idea of hell)... did i send it back? no. did i tip well? yes...

Yes- i have politely queried a vets bill that was wrong.
It turned out that the vet accounting software has a selection of options (nominal codes to those in accounting)that they basically drag and drop into your account- if they drag in the wrong item code by mistake then its automatically put on your bill.
In my case a rectal exam during colic was replaced with the code above it which was a surgical correction of rectal prolapse

As you can imagine- a massive difference in price

The bookkeeper quickly reissued a corrected invoice and all was well.

i wouldn't but i would def get my mum to as i am too much of a wuss but if you know she didn't recieve that treatment then query it and just ask them
