Would YOU refuse a hack?

when i was 15 i was totally focused on the horses got up at 6.30 every morning and rode before school etc its only now im taking it a bot forgranted as i just dont enjoy riding like i used to... i suppose that i have got fed up with arguing with taz as hes so opionionated and he'll be going really well and then boom he'll stick in a dirty stop and run backwards and rear... for no particular reason other then deciding that hes worked hard enough for the day and im getting tired of his napping (before anyone asks he is in no pain anywhere as hes had the vet, physio, saddler, reiki come to see him and hes had his teeth done hes just being an arse...)

Ahh, you see my mother would have come in, opened the curtains and told me I was riding the horse as she had a bad back. I would have grumbled, but I would have got up and rode the horse.

This morning - 11 am - I asked my 15 yr old daughter if she would hack out my bombproof 14.2 cob, as I have a bad back and cannot ride for the foreseeable future. What would you have said? Because I know that at 15, I would have leapt out of my pit and gone. But no, she just rolled over in bed and said 'No'. Is it just my age; are teenagers really no longer so horsemad they'd sell their own granny for the chance to ride?

Gosh! I was lucky enough to have my own pony at that age, but even then just the word "ride" would have sent me into orbit!

Don't understand the youngsters of today!

Yes I would. I have my own horse, hacking doesn't really do it for me anyway and I'm not really a cob person.

That said, if I was asked to do it as a favour I would say yes. And if I didn't have my own horse then I'd do it for pleasure.

I would have been down to the yard on my bike, mucked out ridden and be home by that time when I was 15! My parents wouldn't have stood for it they were very firm, if I wanted the pony I had to be comitted to him....

I would have done anything to groom let alone ride a horse at that age, so many of us who were horseless would... It's just a case of teenagers feeling unenthused about anything their parents are interested in really!

I think reverse psychology must be the answer!

Depends on how keen on the horses they are TBH, myself and my daughter were having a lay in as my friend was doing mornings and me evenings this week and she came running it at 7.15 trying to wake me up saying i want to give Star her breakfast!!! It was my first proper layin for i dont know ow long so she got a grunt from me!!!!!
Must admit she is the keenist kiddie i know were based with an on site riding school and they needed them exercising so she ended up riding 8 ponies yesterday!!!!

I think I probably would of gone when I was 15...when I was 16/17'i was more unmotivated..I always went and did them but my riding motivation lacked a little - had one very difficult horse and one who I couldn't really do what I wanted with, no one to ride with and I had some problems so was pretty miserable and tired all the time so had zero motivation....so to ride another horse on a hack would have been a big no.

I grew out of it tho, now look after three and have my own freelance grooming business so mre than moved...but I still have to drag myself to hack when I'm on my own and it's freezing cold!

sounds like a pretty normal 15 yo tbh :l at 15 i didnt have my own horse so if some one offered me a free ride i would have jumped at it not knowing when the next one would come along but now i have my own horse if i was happily enjoying the comfort of my bed in the early hours of a saturday morning and my mu can in and asked me to hack hers too i would have rolled over and said in a bit :L because shes been fed and watered and she'll be quite happy there untill i get up - lie ins for me dont roll around too often!

It's possibly her age................ there again how many times has your daughter gone to a friends house & you've called to collect her later & the friends mother has said things like "She's been great, so helpful, she did the washing up for me"........???????? Is this my daughter you think? Kids very often say no just because mit's their parents that are asking. If if had been a friends parent she'd have probably said yes. ;)

Very true! Though it's not just her age, my (sadly now ex) sister in law would still do anything my parents asked, but not what her parents asked!!

Ermm.... why would a random person in bed want to ride your horse because you can't? Plenty of people (the MAJORITY probably shocking though that sounds to horsey types) wouldn't.

Just because you have something you really want and can't enjoy it doesn't mean that those who can will.

Sorry - with your daughter on this one.

Haha. I kind of wanted to say that but thought it would be a bit rude. But you said it first so it's ok :D

I'm trying to loan my daughter's TB out for exactly the same reason as your parent's sold your pony! I suppose it was pointless asking her to ride my horse when she won't even bother with her own.

Well, my daughter has something SHE wants - her TB -and I have to do 99% of the care and worry, even though he's too big and strong for me to handle!

Ahhh Its probably because shes obviously grown up around them its not much of a novelty. I was 14 when my none horsey parents finally let me have Zigs and I still had to pay 1000 towards her, my parents paid the rest (I'd been saving for a while hahaha) and I then had to work a part time job to pay towards her and buy her rugs etc. Still got her now at nearly 19 and Im still absolutely crazy for her!

I would have stayed up all night if it meant that I'd be able to ride in the morning and probably still would!!

I am the VERY lucky sharer of 2 fabulous horses - one of which has been out of work mainly for the past 2 years - so any chance to ride is a good chance to me! I am very lucky to have the situation I have :)
