Would you rent a field if ..?

How busy is the road? and how much foot traffic through the field? and well I assume there are gates on entry and exit to this footpath? not everyone shuts gates properly behind them and so is there a risk of your horses getting out?

Styles at both bits, but it goes straight past stables!
Roads quite a busy cut through lane, but right next to a house and big livery yard at the back, Just unsure of what to do at the moment!

soz for all these questions...is the grazing pretty decent? Is it for all year turnout? or are you renting at those closeby stables too? Is it worth the money cos obv you dont want to be paying over the blooming odds. Oh least its styles...I left the field gate open once and nearly got beheaded lol.

FF - Would be renting the whole field. Its about an acre, grazings not fab but i have 2 natives so not fussed.

The 2 stables are included in the rent to use/not use whatever you like.

Belongs to the house not the livery yard and livery yard holds 3/4 shows a year :) Only 5 min walk from where i am now. Just unsure of whether to make the move or not!

Are there owners on site in case anything goes wrong? Are they fully insured to be letting out the stables and the risks involved with having a footpath through their land and horses in the field? Has there ever been any problems there concerning horses in their field? Would you need to leave any valuables on premises apart from the horses in case of thieves in if so, what security measures are in place?

Yup owners live on site and are insured and aware. No problems as far as i know.

Would only be leaving hay and feed there, and grooming brushes ect but would have to buy a shed or somthing. Field gates can be padlocked, owners dont need to get in field and there would only be me there.

well petal what are you unsure about it sounds pretty good tbh? You even get the stables too so thats good. Insured, padlocks, ach it will be grand. Where you moving from?

OH and I are looking at buying a place with land for our two to come and live with us but I love the yard I am at and although its a few miles away the YO is fab and I have made such good friends there. Its such a thought to change or move isn't it?

I dunno im a bit of a worry guts, weve had our horses tampered with and energizers stolen at the yard im at now! Even thought its right next to the YO's caravan!

Would be moving from a small livery yard thats currently in WW3! Litterally a 5 min walk down the road, just dont know! Im secure where i am now and the horses are happy but have a tiny field and i dont get on with most of the other liveries (30/35 years older than me!!)

Ahhh descions! :(

do you have insomnia too? lol. Whats the WW3. What people have been stealing your stuff...how rude. So thats quite an age gap there...do you mind me asking how old you are? Im in my 20s and some of the older liveries are a little patronising but I just smile and remind myself they can't do rising trot lol its fine ;)

I worry and our field isn't completely secure and what was this tampering..r your horses ok?

Na, just a rubbish sleeping pattern ;) WW3/war of the teabags/fight night .. whatever you wanna call yard - war :D

Im 16, but have been there since i was 14. + i dont ride so im the lowest of low with my oversized fluffy pets

Had rocks thrown at my welsh a, random objects thrown in the field, my babys lickit nicked from her stable, water buckets taken out my stables during the night

water buckets taken out the stables....nice horse lovers huh? Items thrown at them? Is that by the oldies? cos thats pretty weird behaviour. Theres a girl that has a pony that she doesnt ride and she is given a bit of a hard time at the yard. SHe's lovely and she loves her pony she just doesnt ride him, lunges him and plays games though...surely its about the horse/pony and if they are well cared for?

People are weird huh?

Pmsl at war of the teabags..its loo roll at mine. I sometimes hide it for a laugh ;)

OOh baked alsaka nice choice...you poor thing having to miss out on the cookie dough.

We dont know who did all the above but it was only mine it was aimed at and 1 other horse for a bit :o

Yup! Weve had a loo roll war too, and a sweeter and sugar war and a muckheap war .. the list is endless, its like kids fighting over a toy

I just stay out of it .. and when you look back and see how pathetic is all is you laugh! But the atmospheres not nice :(

Youve got to laugh tho. blooming adults arguing over absolute nothing. its meant to be fun this horsey stuff.

Well if you move then you wont have to deal with it and you can still keep in touch with your mates on the yard cos you'll be nearby.

What kinds of horses do you have? How many?

Yup! :D Mates at the yard .. none there anymore they all saw sence ;)

Just the 2 in my sig :D

hi guys,

monty , Im my experience i would take the field. I had a field for 6 yrs gave it up due to massive increase in traffic , thefts etc and it was huge 6 acres alot to maintain ....

moved to a yard was soo excited looking forward to meeting people etc ,totally awful had the opposite problem my mom hacks our pony out she is 64 yrs old just walks and trots around the lanes but is young and loves a laugh.

people ignored her didnt want to ride out with her and we both got upset by the general cruelty and violence used to halter break foals, and school "dressage" horses.

back with our own paddock attached to a house (not ours unfortunatly!) and its great we can please our selves , we have our baby on the field and corin (age 19) welsh A pet pony

corin and mom get on great they go out together mom rides and corin leads pudding!

i say give it a go xx

Im so fricking blonde...I asked that q and I had just been looking at your sig.

I just got an Irish cob a fortnight ago...I was just having a look at a warmblood cross type an alrounder but ended up with deedee? Don't ask! and she's 5 lmao. but so genuine and quiet. i tried her witha tiny cross jump and she barged right through it...brilliant just the showjumper I had been looking for lmao

Hey Manny,

welcome to the new insomnia clique :)

I don't get what all the damn crap at yards is about. Why be so cruel to people and their horses. I think I am lucky at the yard I am at, theres a couple of people that are high maintenance but theres no meanness or cruelty. simply awful

Mannypony - Yup ive had so much trouble at livery yards, i know i could cope on my own easily just not sure what to do. I would be jumping for it if it had one more stable so my friend could come! Shes planning to move back to the yard im on now

FF - Deedees not a coloured is she? And lol :D

Yes she's a piebald, weight carrier totally not what I was going for at all, but you know how it is you just get that feeling. The minute I got on her she felt great,

she's quite forward tho but and quite fat...I took her out for a small hack and she sounded like she was having an asthma attack and was soooooooo sweaty lol bless her. she's already fittening up...poor ginge wasnt too impressed the first time he saw me on her he whinnied for ages. he's coming round tho! bribery of carrots works

We have a field with a footpath throught it, it isnt a busy path and as it is remote we only get guenuine walkers not the idiotic ones!

As long as the field was secure i wouldnt be too woried by as road.

I would, but I would also have a contract drawn up properly by the house owner.

I only say as last time I rented a field I had nothing but grief from the lady of the house who made lots of 'claims' and in the end padlocked my field and blocked the gate so i couldn't get my ponies out. I wasn't even allowed up to feed and water them as she decided the ponies now belonged to her. She was doing stupid things like feeding them endless fruit and putting their headcollars on and taking muzzles off.... Scariest time I've ever had with horse owning, and NEVER again. Livery yards might be a bit bitchy, but if you can find a reputable one then worth it;s weight in gold for the peace of mind of knowing your horses are safe.

I definately wouldn't, no. Is it near an estate? - I wouldn't want to risk kids teasing my horse, trying to jump on her back and scaring her or teenagers up and down there on motorbikes or gathering around the entrances with their quad bikes. Is it a decent area with quiet ramblers or on the near outskirts of a high crime area?

A busy road - I don't know, I'd have to see it. Close enough and unsecure enough for her to be stolen or would she manage to escape due to poor fencing and get on a busy motorway?

We are nearish to the outskirts of a busy town! But new yard would be about 5 mins further from the town than livery yard is. We have a footpath going through our current livery yard but it doesnt go through the fields and we get lots of ramblers! :D

It is about a 10/15 min walk from the motorway. But even i assumed this field belonged to the massive livery yard next door! Im going down to have another look and decide :)

My advice would be to fence both sides of the footpath with post and rail and equi-fencing (a tight form of sheep fencing) so that dogs can not get in to the paddock from the public footpath.
Any gates need to be metal ones with reversed hinges so that they can not be lifted off their hinges with boxed in cages for the padlocks to make it more dicfficult to angle grind them off.
Also ensure that all your horses are freezemarked on their shoulders and that the details are held on the National Equestrian Database (Ned online).
