Would you ride ANYTHING?

For the most part, yes.

But I think it is more important that you can sit on something and improve it, rather than just cling on for the sake of 'saving face'.

I have nothing to prove, and to be honest I would rather say 'no, thanks' than be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life.

ETA - actually, that sounds really melodramatic.
My first point is more that it actually takes more skill than 'guts' to ride a difficult horse properly. My second point being that sometimes, it really isn't worth it.

Yep!
I'm another one who has always had to beg/borrow/steal rides...and beggar's can't be choosers!
I also like the challenge of riding lots of different types of horses.

I wouldn't get on something that wasn't fit for purpose. By that I mean: able to carry me, not a bag of bones and not desparately unfit either.

I would get on anything that was able to carry a rider without pain or distress.

I used to work with hunters/pointers and would ride anything back then
grin.gif
but I think I'm probably more choosy now. Having said that, I can't think of a horse I know that I wouldn't get on - including naughty horses!

I also used to work with film stunt horses and they used to rear on command, bronc when required etc which helped teach me how to sit to it!
grin.gif

QR - When i was younger i used to be the "jockey" for all the naughty ponies at the place i used to ride. No one else would get on them so i ended up having to exercise around 6 a day. Back then (im 27 now) falling off didnt really bother me.
Now is a different matter, im used to my safe boy. I dont think i would bounce as well as i did when i was younger.
And i dont have the confidence either.

No I won't ride anything, especially not a bad bucker or rearer.
I cannot afford to be off work injured by riding someone else's problem.

Yes...but will only do so if I have spent some time with the horse to get a feel for his attitude and history and how to go about him/her.

I do try consider my safety at all times...otherwise no job...no money, so I do try to do things in a safe environment and take the necessary precautions.

However I have just agreed to take a horse hunting for the first time...I know nothing about, not even the size or age, it was more of a case of she'll be fine she can ride said the owner.....of course I shall follow this up shortly!
grin.gif

i couple of years ago i wouldnt ride anything apart from my old pony izzy, since i started having lessons from my friend on her mental welsh D i got more and more confident. i rode other peoples horses, naughty bukcers & rearers. now im bringing on my little 5 year old pony. i would ride anything now, but obviously i wouldnt just get on it and bomb round a xc course or anything!

I'll still back and break to drive if I have bred them, or if Ive had them a while, but theres no way I would ride something with a reputation - within reason...My mare was going to the meat man as dangerous, turns out she was in pain and hopelessly confused. I take each case on its own merit, but anything that has a 'demon buck' is a complete no no. I cant sit bucks, Im deaf and have little balance when it comes to theatrics, I also dont jump for the same reason. Its just not worth it. x

Yep, we have a yard of 14 horses and I can say with the exception of one, and the unbroken ones in the field, I have got on all of them
smile.gif
That includes backing a welsh section A, getting on a horse who had thrown his owner off, an unschooled "bucky" IDx, and a just backed 4yr old "Hot" warmblood
grin.gif
I love riding other horses as it teaches me alot too, and generaly I can get some sort of tune out of them.... probably as a result of riding anything for years!!
grin.gif
I have had some fantastic rides as a result, and some crap ones too!!

Sorry, I'm overtired and my sense of humour is warped today, but ummm why did I have to read this 3 or 4 times before I could make certain it said 'Buckers'? PMSL!

I would give anything a go, but have not yet come across anything that is truly dangerous. Which I feel is fortunate.

I do take all the rides I can get.

Have to say no - I'm happy to ride horses who have hissy fits, spins bit of napping etc and bucking going into canter etc but I won't ride anything that rears in case it goes over. I've also been told I have an electric a*s before on some horses - my fave in particular!

I've been on one horse who I considered dangerous and that was a bit hairy but I stayed on (luckily don't think I'd bounce anymore).

I have heard of 2 horses that on having gotten people off their backs have then gone for them while they were on the floor. So with that in mind no I won't blithely get on anything.

I'm the one who gets chucked on the naughty things at the yard. I've had a series of naughty beasts that have taught me a hell of alot and given me a fair amount of stickabilty. I will however draw the line at some thing that is overtly dangerous (i.e a horse that knows no fear and has no self preservation instinct).

Up till about 5 ago my answer would be, yes I would, and have, ridden absolutely anything. Mostly lunatics and I've had some pretty hair-raising experiences over the years. That was fun back then, now I am older, well it's not so much that I am older, it is more a case of my responsibilities are far greater now, so I am choosy about what I ride. If I were to come off a loony horse and break even just a leg, my business would suffer greatly. I have 40-odd horses under my direct care and this is the main reason I choose to not ride loons anymore - I simply cannot be out of action for ANY period of time.

Years ago i worked for a dealer and would get on anything and i mean anything!!! They would turn up and on i'd hop and off i'd go!! I was very lucky and never had any serious accidents. Nowadays i don't, i do alot of breaking which is not a problem as i don't get on til i've done my ground work and i pretty much know what there going to be like. I wouldn't just get on any horse now, if i go to see a horse (thats for sale) i insist on seeing it ridden first. Either i've lost my bottle or as i've got older i've become more aware of potential accidents and the fact that i can't afford to injure myself!!

I would pretty much get on anything. I used to crap myself if someone offered me a ride on their horse but now I will happily get on it and walk and trot and canter and make the horse listen. Its what I get after a year of being thrown about by my ex racer and being bronked off at a show by my friends coloured beastie.. :O!
I will also handle or lunge pretty much anything.
If there was a horse on the yard (When I used to work there) that was known for being feisty or nauty to be brought in or turned out the chances are that I would be dealing with it because nobody else really wanted to.

I see it all as a learning curve

I've done my time as a 'crash test dummy' breaking and schooling, etc, have lost count of the number of falls I had.
I am now choosy.

THat'd be my answer too

No- I wouldnt want to ride a horse which I know wont give me any satisfaction.
So that may be a ploddy wide cob which holds no interest to me, a badly schooled dressage horse who I know will be heavy in the hand and will have totally dead sides, a silly whizzy horse with no sense of self-preservation or a down right mean bucker/rearer who cares little for its rider.

Now if people want to pay me to ride the above then thats different!!

I also used to be crash test dummy and would jump on anything, even the serious nutters
crazy.gif

Now i'm older (and wiser!) i am a bit more choosy...i wouldn't sit on a rearer but almost anything else is ok.

Cant think of a horse I've refused to get on the first time.
There have been a couple I wouldn't get on a second time

This describes my answer in 100%

I will ride anything, usually prefer to know as little as possible about the past problems if they are significant. However, if I decide the horse is dangerous and I don't feel safe on it/so lazy you feel like falling asleep and just not much fun then I won't ride it again (if I can choose

)

Before R,yes I would ride anything no matter how mental other people said it was.
Since he has been born,I am a lot more carefull-just cant put yourself at risk when you have a child to look after.

no...anything could mean, well anything. im not a good enough rider to just get on anything and start dealing with problems straightaway, to be honest i wouldnt want to! whats the point!?
