Would you ride in a bicycle helmet?

I personally wouldn't risk it - go to a GOOD tack shop which stocks a wide range of different hats and get one fitted. Proper fitters can slightly adjust certain makes (with appropriate padding) - something I didn't realise until I bought a new hat last summer. They wouldn't sell me a hat until it had been properly fitted then I had to wear it for half an hour to make sure it was still comfortable! So very different to the last time I bought a hat (many years earlier) when it was plonked on my head and off I went! Hopefully they will be able to sort something out for you!

Well I didn't have a lot of hope when I went to the tack shop but I needn't have worried. The fitter was wonderful and despite the fact it was a little difficult I finally got a hat! It's two sizes bigger than normal and with bits of padding everywhere but it fits!

So the first thing I did after leaving was...

I have the biggest, widest grin I've ever had in my life, I was so happy I could have cried! I've never been quite this emotional when I've not been able to ride for a while but just thinking about how bad my accident could have been I realise I'm very lucky to be sitting in the saddle at all.

Thanks to everyone for your replies - without them I would never have gotten the guts to go to a shop and ask them to fit a hat to my wonky head. :D :D

I think Jules means in one incident, and that's true. Bike helmets aren't designed with impact in mind, they're designed to protect you from skidding on concrete. Riding hats are made to withstand a hard knock.

Are they not designed to take the impact of being hit by a car? That's that main reason i'd wear one on a bike!

Or racing downhill and crashing into a tree / rock.
I did have a quick google of testing standards for cycle helmets but I would imagine they can't be too dis-similar to riding standards with the exception of the penetration test.
I'll ask OH as he works in a bike shop and cycles a lot.
