If some complete randomer called to your house while you were out and asked if they could use your dog at stud because their bitch is in season, and left their number, would you:

a) ignore it
b) call them and diplomatically, without swearing :p explain why that would be a terrible idea

Oh and if anybody is even thinking of suggesting 'c', it's never going to happen, for her or anyone else!!!!

oh I know my gob is too big! but I would return their call and find out if health testing is something they are aware of, then try to give them some insight into the downside of breeding, especially with many breeders having puppies they cannot shift.

Of course.

By the time I'd got through the list of questions about their bitch - made them read out the pedigree, line by line, as invariably it will be full of unknown animals, DNA & health test status, KC studbook number,...........they would probably rethink the idea.

I'm sorry I wouldn't waste my breath. These sort of people will always find someone who is willing to let their dog be used. Sometimes trying to explain health tests,Suitability of breeding stock etc is like spitting into the wind. JMHO

B! You've been given the chance to tell someone a "few" good advises about dog breeding, before the deed is done, take it.

Maybe make a list before you phone, so that you don't forget anything. You've already gotten some good suggestions, but perhaps add asking about if they know about the importance of checking the inbreeding percentage for the potential puppies when choosing the stud dog, ask about what qualifications the bitch have that makes her suitable as a potential brood bitch (needless to say perhaps, but functioning uterus is not a qualification), tell them about the German breed club for German Shepherd Dogs and their view about suitable breeding animals and unsuitable ditto...

Another ignore from me, no point in a lecture, if they want pups then they'll just go elsewhere......

Er...how did they even know how to find you? Or that you had an entire male dog? Am I the only one who would think randomly turning up at someones home without asking them first is a bit off?

Option D - Install automated defence grid! Complete with shark pit :D

If you call them and tell them why it would be a stupid thing to do there is a tiny chance that they may listen to you, if you don't call them there is a zero chance. But hey, then people on here can grumble about them when they breed their dog to something else and sell the puppies on Preloved!! Better to try to do something than do nothing at all..

Tell them "I'd love to let you use my dog, and i'm flattered that you think he's the right one for your Bitch, but I neutered him x amount of months ago, and what you see are a pair of prospectic balls"

I'd call them back and find out who the bitch was and why they had choosen my dog probably. The worst that could happen is that the person was a complete numpty, but no harm in being friendly and offering advice if needed.

Always best to be polite and give the other person the benefit of the doubt. You never know who you are dealing with! Maybe your caller has done his research?

I was at The Game Fair one year with a couple of dogs in tow and this ordinary looking chap came up and started to chat. We swopped addresses and I thought no more about it. A couple of weeks later, I got a letter and we had an interesting if brief correspondence about dogs.

He turned out to be the king of Sweden. I kid you not. I'm told they are a very nice ordinary family and can be seen cycling around Stockholm quite regularly! A former boss of mine always used to dress like a tramp -- he was a first cousin of HM The Queen!

Very true Dry Rot. I was on work experience at John Marsden's yard when doing my AI, and this scuffy man used to wander round the yard and stables. I thought he was the gardener. A week in I found out he owned the whole estate, event horses and polo ponies that were there.

You've met the king of Sweden!

I don't know if they cycle around that much these days, but for example, as far as I know, the king of Sweden usually car commutes together with our queen to their work at Stockholm Castle, by sitting in the same traffic jam as everyone else.

I have had knocks at my door to ask "would I breed from my akita" being long haired people had obs not seen one before and one local before and one bloke was asking on behalf of a friend wh had a (long coated dog) but lived miles away and had been on the look out for a long coated bitch "I was straight to the point";) I actually have her pedigree and breed history (although she as a rescue) I also took great pleasure In telling them she was (spayed):D and proceeded t say (his friend may not be worthy of puppy) and where exactly can he guarantee I find top class homes for that many puppies needing experienced homes and take them back when they re a year and un maneagable (he looked confused at that)
I stopped walking her during the day when people where asking left, right and center as I gt peeved off.

Hi all, apparently she came back on Saturday again after I had left and apparently sounded really desperate but was told by the person here that I was very strongly not interested.

In terms of research, he's not titled (yet!! :p) and his health tests are not available online so I don't know what she would have found out about him apart from seeing me out walking him or being told by someone else that I had a dog of x breed.

I have since fished the number out of the bin where I threw it on Friday night :p and have just rung it, no answer, will call back tonight. Note has number and says 'to cover dog'.
Oh, and she had a list, apparently :/ and yes, we do live pretty remote.

I don't care if she is the Queen :p of Sweden, it won't make my dog any more breedworthy!!

Well S4S, you were right, hung up when I got to the reasons for/cost of hip and elbow scoring.

She has a lady she knows with a dog anyway.

She said that the reason for using my dog to cover hers was 'because she is in heat'.

I didn't swear though :)

But at least you gave it a try, and you didn't swear.

But if her bitch is in heat now, she already knows another owner with a dog that could be used, she doesn't know you, and you live pretty remote, then why in all the world does she turn up on your doorstep not once, but twice, and the second time sounding desperate?

How weird.

Oh I don`t know! The other week my Champion mini bull earned some dosh ,a very nice (health tested) bitch came over from Germany to use what turned out,on evaluation,to be sterile. My little Mole is now renamed as Plan B.We did`nt mind a bit actually!

I'll swear for you: what an idiot!

I see this a lot round here. The vet's notice board is full of stupid adverts saying things like "Beautiful medium sized bitch looking for large dog to make guard dog puppies". I can't believe they allow that sort of crap at the vet's.

C_C,

yes most certainly I'd ring them back. If they've gone to the trouble of tracking you down, and if they know what they're talking about, and they may, then I'd allow them to make their pitch. The bitch may have an exceptional dam line, she may be near exotic, and you may just regret being dismissive.

There's no harm in listening and you have the simple option to turn them down.

Alec.

Well done for trying at least!

How stupid! I would be complaining to the vets if they did that at my vets. Our vet's noticeboard is mostly lost dogs or rescues.
