Was out in the car yesterday and drove past a field of donkey, some of them which were rugged.
Now, i thought donkeys were hardy little creatures? Tough cookies....
I heard about them needing shelter from rain but never heard about them needing rugs
Any donkey owners on here rug yours? Am i just being stupid? :D

Yes, I watched a programme about donkey care and they said very definately that they should be rugged. If you think where they come from they are bound to feel the cold. Also they lose a lot of heat through their ears as they are designed to keep them cool in the heat.

I would love a donkey, unfortunately our YO's absolutley adorable old horse hates them and apparently gets very wound up by them, I would not want that as he is a total sweetheart. Have to stick with Fany, she looks like a donkey at present she is soooooooo hairy!

I have had a donkey for 24 years (yes he's an old man now, at leat 32 years poss more). He has always wintered without a rug but with a warm shelter until the last 3 years when he started feeling the cold a bit. He managed with a foal rug until the bitter cold weather in January this year, when he was shaking with cold so ended up wearing a sleeping bag under his foal rug until I could get something warmer.

He now is the proud owner of a fal rug which is super snug although not sure if it is quite his colour.

Donkeys are not waterproof like horses and ponies so people rug them to keep them warm and dry.

I didn't realise their coats were not waterproof, I just assumed they would be! Apparently they do not have chestnuts either, is that true?

Love the donkey pics! :D

yes
eap if wet and windy
as someone has said they arent hardy as you make think esp weather wise..strong yes

i know someone with two donks and they even have heat lamps in their stables..very spoilt donks

i thnk at sidmouth donkey santuray they educate people abot donkey welfare

loving the donkey pics..so sweet

Old or sick donkeys only. They must have shelter and straw to eat.
They do have a type of chestnut, but they are close to the skin and soft, not knobbly and hard like horses.

Donkeys are not as hardy as people think. Their coats are not waterproof like horses.
They can loose a lot of body heat through their ears, and generally donkeys are very stoic...they will not let on how cold/sick/injured they are.

So long as they grow a good coat then I would be happy with just a shelter. Normally rug up the old or sick ones.

Better rush out and rug all mine then! They have pleanty of stables to go in and they prefer to be outside unless its hot.Don't forget desert mountain regions freeze at night.

well, our two are not rugged! They have lovely thick coats and a very good shelter which is bedded down with straw :)

They also have access to hay :)

They definately do not need rugs!

My yard kind of adopted a donkey, he was left in a field over the road, no one can find out who owns field or donkey.....but we've been leaving him some hay and fresh water, and we've put a foals rug on him....one of his hooves looked awful so my farrier took a look n trimmed him slightly, he has been there since summer and we've never seen his owners! but at least he is warm, dry, fed and happy!

We considered phoning a rescue place, would they just take him? or would the let me keep him???????

Yes, I put a rug on Pluto when it started getting cold. He has a stable and shelter bedded down with straw as well - free range!

He now has a different rug which has a higher neck to keep him nice and warm in the snow.

You can see he has a huge surface area on his ears where he can lose heat!

He is happy to share his food with his new BF, Felix.
