Would you say something...?

The hat thread prompted me to wonder what other people might do about this:

I posted recently about a load of new liveries and things going missing all the time. (We are hopefully moving the horses to the new house asap!) Anyway I had a hat which I'd left lying around for ages. It still had a black silk and looked like new, but I came off out hacking and landed on my head so hadn't used it since. I just never got round to throwing it out. Well, you can guess what happens next....

Yes, the hat has gone AWOL. Now half of me thinks, serves them right if they come off, but then half of me thinks the consequences could be serious. Problem is, I don't know who has actually taken it so I can't say anything... perhaps I should leave a note explaining the hat is damaged?

Put a larger note up on the notice board saying it has gone missing and is damaged. While part of me thinks it would serve them right, you would always feel responsible if anything really bad happened

I'd put up a sarcy note...

"To the tealeaf who stole my hat: it's broken and dangerous to use. Enjoy!"

After you've left, of course ;)

I'd pop a note up addressed to the light fingered barsteward that nicked my hat, and explain that the hat is damaged and will not protect their head. You could say that it would serve them right but that your consience wouldn't allow you to let them use this hat without knowing and ask them to return the hat so you can destroy it. You could also say that they should think before they take something that doesn't belong to them in future.

I wouldn't worry too much. Anyone who puts on a hat without knowing its history has probably had a bump to the head already;)

^^ this- an excellent response, and it's nicely worded so noone can accuse u of calling anyone specific a thief :)

I’d say something for sure, despite if the hat is damaged and therefore worthless, end of the day someone has helped themselves to something that doesn’t belong to them and even had the down right cheek to continue to use it! it’s down right theft.

Not only that, but what if this person then lends the hat to someone else, a child for instance, yes it's easy to joke about karma and all but this could be the one thing that saves someone’s life or prevents them from being seriously injured for the rest of their lives.

If they don’t fess up, well then it’s their own choice but at least you have made then aware that you know there’s a scum bag thief amongst them and that the hat is not safe to use.

this is why i hate yards. there are so many thieves about and plenty in the horse world.

I wouldnt bother saying anything tbh, if they have a fall and hurt themselves its their own fault for stealing.

This, just perfect! Although I would be mad that some theiving sod had nicked my hat (how dare they!!!), if they did have an accident with it I would feel just awful. Imagine if it was a child?

Can't believe that people are happy to pinch things that aren't even theirs, I wouldn't even borrow without asking, I certainly wouldn't just take! We have had to lock our hats away as when one livery brings a friend to ride out, they just use the tack room as a loan shop and go round finding a hat that fits, if I found that they had ever borrowed mine I would be absolutly hopping!
