Would you say this is a weird attitude?!

Not weird at all, very sane. I've never sent a horse away to be backed without giving strict instructions that all I want it to come back having done is hack. I then hack on for at least six months , slowly integrating small sessions in the school then take it from there, depending on age etc.. we then work up to hunting, add schooling and jumping, and shows. But would be happy to just have a hacker if that's all the horse could do. I don't hold with the idea of sending them away to be backed and schooled on straight away, it's completely wrong for them in so many ways

If he is happy to hack out alone, surely he would find it easier to enter competition rings alone or go cross country. Enjoy your horse your way.

Thanks....definitely feel more confident in my opinion now :)
I know that he is young and sharp...he most definitely lacks confidence so that's what I would like to make my priority this year. I feel he will be many years of work in progress. ...with hopefully lots of fun along the way :)
