Only if I wanted to get shot of it. At the end of the day I want to know where my horse is going and who to. Doesn't guarantee anything as it could be passed on but at least I would have done my best.
I would send to a dealer who perhaps sold on commission & I could vet who bought him. However, I've only sold one horse in my life so am absolutely rubbish at selling.
Only if it was a horse I didn't really care about. I would normally thoroughly vet a home before I let a horse go. Anyway you tend not to get the best deal from a dealer as he needs margin for profit.
Never, but then I fall in love with them all. Had to get rid of a horse quickly once, it was totally unsuitable for my daughter and she was too scared to ride it, everyone on the yard told me to take it to a dealer but i couldn't do it, felt responsible for the animal, eventually someone on the yard felt sorry for me and bought it from me.
I bought a horse that it quickly turned out was not right for me. She was not a bad horse, but all sorts of circumstances conspired to make it a bad experience for both us. The weather that winter was terrible so turnout was non existent and she quickly became very silly and then became nappy and I lost confidence. I turned her out in the spring and then sadly handed her to a dealer who said she was a saint, but by then I couldn't bring myself to get on her. So she was sold. I lost a fair amount of money, but I managed to get a lovely Mare who I have had for 7 years now.
No, once I have a horse or any animal, I keep it for life. Other than the hens I once had, I was terrified they would get run over, they went to a family friend who had the facilities.
I would like to say I havent, but when I was a teenager I tried to. The dealer wouldnt take it at any price as he was too naughty. Actually her words were 'f***ing lethal' I think
. (Dumped her twice when she came to see it). I had warned her he was a monster, but v v cheap and a nice looker. The dealer went up in my estimation TBH as she said she couldnt imagine there was a person on this earth that she could sell him to.
He was a git - we sent him off to be backed and he came back labelled unrideable. Sent him off to a 2nd trainer and he was sent back again as backed but he was always a b*gger. He used to buck as you got on and then p*ss off (amongst other attractive traits) . He had a big domed forehead and I could never buy a horse with this after having him.
He was called Brumby, which I think is a wild Australian horse - how apt....
All that said, I would consider selling a good horse to a dealer if I felt they were professional eg I would sell to Stubley as they seem to take care to match horse with rider etc
No but thats only because I personally would like to see where the horse went and would always want to stay in touch and make sure the horse is going to the right home.
However I would like to add that not all dealers are scary and evil and dont care about the horses they sell
I could be a dealer if wanted...wouldnt change the way I look after horses the way I'd treat them, yes I'd have to stop myself from getting attached to each horse and not get 'too emotionally involved' but I'd still do my best if selling from the yard to make sure each horse was sold a good home and to the right person.
I'm sure there are lots of dealers with a heart that would feel the same as me....if I was a dealer for example.
I suppose I could call myself a dealer... I always try to match the horse and new owner, what makes it easier for me is the fact that I don't have to make a living of it Of course I care about all the horses that pass through my hands, how else can you make some money? It's like a farmer that wouldn't care about his livestock and land...

forgot to add that dropping off at a dealers is not an easy option to get rid of rubbish (excuse my language), I would never buy something that is unsaleable, ie not healthy or dangerous, of course quite often I will buy something you would struggle to sell to a true private buyer as I am prepared to sort out problems and put work in in order to get my 'margin' when reselling
Well, I would consider it, with a carefully selected dealer. The thing is I bought from a Dealer, and my horse got a nice home. I don't think a horse going through a reputable dealer is necessarily going to get a bad deal.
I would be interested to see how many people who wouldn't sell to a Dealer have actually bought from one in the past.
Yes - why not- I have bought and sold from dealers and private sellers alike..
...the one that sold me a demented pony for my novice son was a private seller.....
...the one that took back an unsuitable (but lovely) horse and swapped him for my horse-of a lifetime was a dealer, who didn't have a great reputation but was fine with me...
Dont see that it makes much of a difference...I sold our lovely little shettie to a woman who travelled a long way for her, I think she's in a brill home but once the money and passport is handed over thats it, its nothing to do with me anymore whether she keeps her or sells her on....
Maybe as a part exchange. I wouldn't sell to a dealer because as they have to get a profit for themselves, you won't get as good a price as you could get selling privately - the only reason I would sell to a dealer is if I needed a really quick sale for whatever reason. Even then I would probably only do so if the horse was a good one.
If the horse was a very sensitive or difficult one I would sell myself. Not because I wouldn't trust a dealer, but because I would feel personally responsible for making sure that a problematic horse found the perfect home, no matter how long it took. I wouldn't want to just offload that issue onto somebody else.
yes, i have done it before and would again. not all dealers are dodgy, yes they will make money on a horse, that's their living, but i would rather sell on an unsuitable horse through a dealer than have all the timewasters and joyriders of a private sale.
Theyre are different types of dealer, those that buy cheap from sales and no nothing about the horses they are buying then other ones that vet what they are about to buy or pass on! I would only go through the latter.
Any dealer can get hold of rubbish i appreciate that - but those that constantly go to the sales up their chances of getting more rubbish!
No. Never have, never will. I don't buy from dealers either. (I am a dealer/producer though, albeit my horses tend to stay here for at the very least one year, but generally two.)
I bought my wonderful horse off a dealer and know of three others from her which have all been super (although very different) sorts.
I think it would very much depend on the dealer and circumstances. If their clientele was sound and their reputation good, then I'd definitely consider it. They have their name to consider and I'd hope they would have my horses' best interests at heart and not sell to the wrong person for them.
The circumstances leading to me making the decision to sell at all don't really bear thinking about
