Would you sell to a dealer?

Well I have tried to sell Sas since Dec, but because she is so green, the very few calls I have received have not been suitable. I am now resigned to loosing lots of money, why because I dont have time at the moment to further her education & my daughter has never bounded with her. The devil horse she loves, & it naps for England. Sas can buck, but she is a sweetie to handle in & out the stable. So do I take £500 from a dealer & hope she goes to a good home? Or do I plug on with an extra horse I never built into the equation? I am really torn, but I do not want her wasted & all the time getting older yet having the attitude of a 4yr old. I can do all the ground work, but until I get the ok I am not allowed to ride, she even missed Friday's lesson because my daughter wanted to take the devil horse instead. I am sure I am leaving myself open to a lot of criticism, but here goes!

they aren't all the devil incarnate.

either that, take her to a sale.
 
I wouldn't sell to a dealer because I would have no idea what sort of home he'd be sold onto, but I'm the type of fussy person who wants to know exactly where they'll be going etc.

I would sell her to the dealer; dealers aren't in the game to loose money, they will bring her on, turn her into a riding pony, then flog her to a good home, for a profit! Better than her hangng around, using more of your hard earned cash!
 
no-body can be 100% certain of their horses future once it's sold.

a "private" buyer could buy a horse on a sunday, and sell it on the following week.

who knows.
 
On the face of it no I wouldn't sell my horse to a dealer.

If the horse really is very green then someone to train the horse and resell her might be your only option though.

Is there no way that your daughter would ride her twice a week and you could lunge her a couple of times whilst you try to find someone? Some people would really love to buy a horse like this for more than £500 too. So if I were you I would advertise her again as she is.
 
it depends on the dealer.I keep my horse on a dealers yard and I have to say they are good.All horses stay on the yard for a minimum of a month before they are advertised for sale and buyers are encouraged to come and try the horse in all situations they want the horse for first.If it is thought the horse won't be suitable for them they are told so and will not be allowed to buy.
 
I am in similar situation in that i have a young horse that i can't manage and another horse that is perfect for me. i don't have time for 2 horses but I just wouldnt sell my boy to anyone especially a dealer for the very reason that he is so green. he needs womeone that will understand that he is just a baby learning and not doing things out of badness. it will bankrupt me but i will not sell him until either i find the perfect home for him, or he is well educated enough to not to get shipped all over the place from one unsuitable home to the next.

sorry if thats not what you want to hear. i posted about this last week. Its up to the individual. i certainly learned that with my friends response to me not letting people see my boy cos I knew the home not right.

How about a compromise - some dealers offer a selling service. ie your horse goes there and they school it on and then sell it for you. Might be worth considering?
 
I have sold to a dealer (well I PXed Zante for Splodge) as she was going to be VERY hard for me to sell myself - she was sold to pull a cart (she was broken ride and drive) then somehow ended up on the Renwicks yard and the girl who has her now bought her off her friend who got her from the Renwicks (pretty sure that is right!!) So it was a happy ending even though she did go round the houses a bit! I would deffo do it again, especially with something sharp or green.
 
Whether or not you sell to a dealer is up to you. But personally I would not recommend it. This is mainly because if I ever sold a horse on I would wish to know where it has ended up. I understand the same could be said about selling a horse to a private owner but I would imagine selling to a dealer would make the horse more difficult to trace in the event you wished to know where it is.
There may be some good dealers out there but equally there are some who are unscrupulous and at the end of the day they don't care about the welfare of the horse just how much it will fetch them

Is your daughter the person who is stopping you from riding the horse? Also does your daughter want the horse as you say she has not bonded with the horse and then say she took the devil horse somewhere ( was it to a lesson?)
If it is your daughter who is stopping you from riding her have you explained the situation regarding the horse and that unless you can school and ride her she will have to go?
Have you asked on any websites for people who may be interested in riding her for you in order to continue her education.
I am sure there are people out there who would jump at the chance of maybe riding a horse for free, so long as they have some kind of rider insurance or you do.
Just a thought but it may be something worth considering and if you can change her ways then you can decide at a later date whether to keep or sell on.
I know I would much rather take the risk than sell now for a loss to someone who maybe doesn't have the welfare of the horse in mind and is just thinking of a profit they can make.
It is up to you at the end of the day though as it is your horse.

Well Kidalton they don't have the same attitude as me then because the only way my lads will be leaving me is in a crate to be cremated. And yes I also have a green horse.

That maybe but in a hypothetical scenario -as I will not pass on my lads to anyone - at least if you sell to a private buyer and keep in contact you can trace where your horse ends up unless you happen to find a dealer who will ne happy to pass on information to you.
 
I never have but I would do it if necessary eg I needed to sell quick as I couldn't care for them properly etc.

What about the project horses site? Yours sounds far nicer than most on there and they ask all the money so I think if you put yours on for £1k it would go very fast.

The dealer I use is one of the most honest people I know! He is far more reliable (IMHO) than any private seller - but then again I am a *buy from a dealer* person anyway!
 
I have only sold horses I didn't like to a dealer! However that said, as soon as you sell you never know where they are going to end up.

Sounds like she is a project, so unless you can find someone who wants to put a lot of time into her, you might have limited avenues.
 
If you are having problems selling the horse and you can't jusify spending the money or making her more sellable then i would consider going down the dealer route. we had one come out and look at my sisters previous horse when she was for sale.
I was once of these people who didn't think much of dealers because all i heard was bad but now i wouldn't mind going to a dealers to get a horse, you risk buying and selling to anybody whether they are private or dealers.
 
I have part exchanged with a dealer as the horse l had grew to big for me and l ended up with my wonderful boy. And the dealer was really good and found my horse a lovely home and she is still there. So yes l would sell to a dealer.
 
Good for you Weezy I am glad you found a good dealer unfortunately the stories I have been told about dealers have not been good ones hence my attitude towards them.
I am an auction person and have the attitude of give the horse another chance as most are in them for one reason or another and not necessarily their own fault either!
 
No. I don't trust dealers as far as I can sell them and you just don't know if she will end up in a good home(at least selling you can vet the home) or anything..
 
The only reason why I wouldn't sell my horse to a dealer is because I know I can get more money privately. But if a dealer offered me the same money as a private person I wouldn't hesitate to sell to them.

If you are being offered £500 by a dealer ask £1k for her and you'll probably sell her tomorrow.
 
I think the issue I would be more concerned about is the loss.

Knowing the dealer you are thinking of using, he is quite reputable and on the other hand knowing the Mare I cannot understand why she won't sell! Or comprehend selling her for that little........

Now if it was the evil one we were talking about I would say do it but other than the odd buck that mare is lovely.

The stress and cost of advertising and timewasters is driving me mad!!
