The more hooves are used, the faster they grow down - it is not true that hooves get worn away !! But obviously the horse must be on the right diet to achieve this - and you must be doing that right.
If the farrier (who I know and trust) ever told me to shoe mine, I would. My farrier supports me using a Riders Rasp and keeping the shape as much as I can. We ride 6 times a week, on all surfaces.
