went to try cob last night and bloke selling him tacked him up in the stable with a fag in his mouth blowing smoke all over the poor lad and then threw the fag but in a puddle of wee and left it there.
Now, I used to smoke so I am not anti smoking, but surely smoking in your horses stable is a bit much!!!
Totally put me off the place and probably affected my opinions on the poor pony!
Some people!

I don't smoke, but if I did I'd never smoke anywhere near my horse, and definately not in the stable!! I probably wouldn't the whole time I was up there! Its a bit dodgy - with all that hay and straw around! And probably not v pleasant for the poor cob

ABSOLUTELY NO WAY....I am a non smoker any way.....but basic common sense tells you that you don't smoke anywhere near stables, its a major danger to the horses and the yard..............blumin shocking

Nope, but then I don't smoke

But I wouldn't allow someone to smoke in my stable either, or outside the door, partly because of the horse and partly because I do not like having smoke around me (for the reasons that it's disgusting and I have sinus problems that can be set off by it). I'm currently in an American barn set up and some people smoke in there, though luckily down the other end of the stable. But it makes me shiver to think what could happen if they accidently left a fag end burning near all that hay & straw!

I am a smoker, I don't smoke either whilst at the yard or in the field!
I have seen others extinguish their cigarettes in the field and left the butts which is bad enough! but to smoke in a stable is beyond madness!!

No, I would never smoke in the stable. Its just not very safe.
I just gave up smoking, and I am not anti smoking at all. But I do think there is such a thing as a 'filthy smoker', which is what he sounds like. Someone with permanent fag hanging out of mouth no matter where they are, blowing it onto everyone without thought, and throwing the butts wherever and never tidying them up. Ugh.

Thats nothing - a particularly classy RI (allegedly)/livery we had used to use the school as her ashtray and would blow the smoke up her horses nose, sit on straw and hay bales whilst smoking, light up whilst riding etc despite being asked on numerous occaisions to stop by YO owner etc she never did as we were all talking b*llocks apparently......

We have a tea room set aside so we can smoke in there if we want and some smoke outside the indoor school if there is a show on and we are all gathered around. I am much more concious theses days of smoking around people following the changes in the smoking laws, and of course common sense prevails, you don't smoke in a barn or horses stable. Straw and hay can smoulder away for hours before they actually set fire, I don't think people realise that.

It would only be down the road from you Lou so if you see a plume of smoke in the stoke sky one day it's probably that stupid bloke's yard!!!!! Fingers crossed all ponies are in the field when it does happen x

On our yard we have a couple that smoke on the yard. One doesn't have their horse there and the other has been seen smoking in their stable! The yard owner doesn't want them smoking on yard and has put no smoking stickers up but they are being ignored and for some reason they won't speak to them directly! I suppose its going to take a fire and a few horses in our barn stables to die before they take it seriously.

Not in stable no, but have smoked on yard, not near any hay or straw i might add. Put them out in puddle and put them in the poo bucket!

But then.... i don't even smoke on the yard anymore!

Your allowed to smoke ont he yard and I agree with this, but if your smoking, you dont smoke near the barn or the tack shed of the hay. You make sure the fag is out, and done smoke near the neds.. pretty simple.

Surely smoking in your stable, is classed as smoking in a confined workspace and is against the law???

I used to smoke..... dont anymore.... but i would never have smoked on the yard.

Our yard is no smoking and there are signs everywhere. We've recently had a memo saying that as it's licenced as a pulic place (not sure if this is all livery yards or because it's just become a riding school too) they legally cannot smoke anywhere on the premises. Some people smoke on their way to the fields but these are miles away from the yard and any hay/straw etc, but some people from a yard next door can be regularly seen smoking whilst riding, which I think not only looks awful, it can't be very nice for the horse either! Personally I wouldn't smoke on the yard at all if I did smoke

I think that depends on weather is a persons work place. our yard is private, but I suppose if it was a comercial livery yard /riding school, then yes technically, it would be illegal to smoke on the premises.

I used to need a fag before every single jumping lesson to try and stop me from throwing up with nerves, and I wouldn't even smoke on the yard car park, I would always wander down the road. I was just terrified of a spark of ash floating off and being the one responsible for burning down 35 stables!
