Hi just want some other peeps opinions I am currentley at a livery yard it has four acres and 10 horses so no grazing im still having to put hay in feild for him the hay they provide is dusty and all the horses have coughs have to provide my own electric and fencing to have individual turnout and it costs me £45 per week for DIY livery
On plus side good school and nice people

I have been offered place on another professionally run yard also has nice facilities nice hay they make there own beautiful maintained fields but it is not individual turn out my horse will be out with five other geldings also it is cheaper at £40 per week

What would you do ?

No I wouldn't. If your horse will be happy turned out with company then I would move to the other yard you mention, if not look for somewhere else! Where you are sounds awful, even if the people are nice! Good luck

I would move too.

Its not the 10 acres and no grazing bit. You don't say if the others are 24.7 turnout , if they are I can see why no grass.

We are around 10 acres + (2 acre front paddock)10 horses , have way way too much grass you can see my paddocks on this thread .http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=535119

We maintain ours 5* this is how they look.

Sounds like this yard do not put any finances into maintaining the fields. So yes move. We are £ 40 per week diy or £43 with me depooing after your horse. We have very good facilities including indoor and outdoor.

This yard need to improve the grazing of they will not keep liveries.

With decent hay ,I could accept a ack of grazing .Mouldy dusty hay is ,for me ,the show stopper. There is plenty of good hay about (though farmers are trying to dump their poor hay before it becomes unsaleable). The difference betwean the cost of good hay and rubbish hay is minimal!

Thank you for your advice I'm gonna move ASAP I should have also added I'm changing job in a few week and need some one to either turnout or bring in as I have always done my horse myself this is a big deal I need to know he's gonna be looked after
The girl who works at yard doesn't want to do anymore horses so YO is gonna get her boyfriend to do him who has no horse sense the thought of this fills me with dread and I'm gonna have to go and check on him so this will add extra fuel costs
Like you say there is no reason for me to stay here

+1. 4 Acres for 10 horses is nowhere near enough!

Pan

If they are in at night and out in day that rule doesn't apply as in out case where they are on 4 acres while the other 4 are rested. as picture shows they do well :) Where we have even got 250 bales of hay off two of the paddocks even tho 10 horses to 9 cares as pictures shows our fields can cope and we have now way to much grass as farmer isnt doing hay anymore.

But if OP finds that is the sum total of land and not rested then I agree thats not enough grazing for the horses.

I really don't know why some people do not look after their grazing. When a livery views the yard , one of the things they note is the fields and the grass. Surely looking over a field where your horse would be grazing, and the fields are badly cared for , grass poor- weeds everywhere and poo piles all over. To me that rings a bell. If they can't have a good first opinion they think sheesh do I really want my horse on that field??? If they don't look after the land are they really going to look after my horse??

personally i would leave this yard and go to the other one because it costs less and it also has better management for the horses and you, but if you are comfortable about the other yard and your horse is content then you might as well stay there. Ultimately it is up to you! :)

Hi folks
Thankyou for all you comments I have moved now loving it at my new yard he has settled in really well it's like he's been there forever he hasn't been out with the other geldings yet but he's in a paddock next door so they can get to know one another for a week or so before he goes in with them
I don't know why I stay for so long at that other yard and put up and shut up for so long

Thanks again for all you advice guys x

I moved my girl from individual turnout to herd turnout 12 months ago tomorrow and she's so much happier - no I wouldn't be staying if they are all coughing and there's clearly not sufficient turnout for number of horses

I would move, your horse will be much happier if he has friends to go out with. He would also be happier with good grass and hay and you wouldn't have to worry about him having a cough. You can always meet new people. Hope this helps!

Move! I'm at a yard with 120 acres, 365 grazing, 14 x 14 foot stables, unlimited straw, a flood lit, olympic sized jumping outdoor arena, currently building an indoor arena and i only pay £25 in the summer and £32 in the winter! there are also only 20 horses on this yard.. you're definitely missing out where you are at the moment :(

I'd move! I stayed at a yard like that once for years and now so happy I moved. Your horse will be glad to be running with other horses - they are social animals after all. Do the best thing for you and your horse.

OMG - that's considered luxury where I live.
Previous yard had 36 horses and 3 acres of land. Needless to say not all where turned out. I was lucky enough to be able to hire a field so mine could at least be out 8 hours a day.
There were individual paddocks available (20m x 40m) which had to be very very carefully managed by the people who had them (extra on top of livery fees) and some of them only used for for 1 or 2 hours a day :(
If it rained there was a rush to bring them all in (even if it was just a shower).
Said yard now has a policy where only 4 hours a day turnout is allowed. Lots of people have left but yard is still full?
Now on a yard with not so many facilities but horses are out from dawn to dusk regardless of weather. Horses happy = owner happy.

Forgot to mention that there is a yard/riding school about 1 hrs drive for me that has no land. Horses are stabled 24/7 (stable 3m x 3m) with 2 small sand paddocks for turnout.
