Would you take a LWVTB horse without having seen it?

Appreciate all your advice. I booked the day off and tried him today in the school and on a hack. He is lovely and what i hoped he would be. I took my friend with me who knows horses and he liked him too. We have agreed a 3 month LWVTB with an option to review after 6 months, starting in January which I am pleased at. I do appreciate all your advice, will let you know how I get on.

Well done. Make sure he’s five stage vetted before leaving the yard.

He leaves 2nd January and the vetting is being done 18th December which is latest I can get....2 weeks should be ok?

As it is a loan rather than sale I think the timing is fine but suggest you sort out the insurance properly following the vetting, if you take it out the same day it will be covering you from when he arrives so the seller can stop theirs.

I dont mean to rain on your parade OP but something feels off.

Is the seller a dealer/trade seller or a genuine private seller?

Do you have a written contract?

I just find it really odd that a seller is willing to keep a horse for another 6wks (paying its keep and possibly keeping it I work) knowing that horses will injure themselves at the most inconvenient of times. 6wks will require a lot of bubble wrap and cotton wool!

Then this seller is happy to wait 6wks during which time you could change your mind and they have lost viewings and possible sales.

Not only is seller waiting 6wks the horse who is fit for purpose now has to pass a vetting. Again losing viewings and possible sales.

Then she is packing horse off on a 2mth trial 400 miles away to get a sale 3mths later.

Are you leaving a deposit? Paying full amount for a refund (partial/full?) if horse is returned for any reason.

What happens if horse isinjured during transport or during the trial. What if there is a ridden career ending incident whilst horse is on trial to you?

I don't mean to be a debbie downer and I really hope it all works out but it seems really off to me and I'd advise a lot of caution to anyone never mind a first time buyer and owner

Private seller, and yes we have a contract that is being written up now.

It's a private seller, and yes, we are getting a contract drawn up now to reflect this.

Deposit has been agreed. I will insure the horse for it's value like it was a loan, so if anything happens, my insurance covers it...no different to a normal loan. I am completely comfortable with how things are and the seller is. Seller wants the right home, and I want the right horse so both are willing to work together. I will use a solicitor to check everything over.
