Will she pass a 5 stage with an obvious sarcoid? Why do you want a 5 stage at that price? Blow me, 1.5K? I’d be jumping at her for that price! Hope it all goes well. She sounds lovely.

Yes she will pass a 5 stage with a sarcoid. It will be noted on a certificate and excluded by insurance but it doesn’t stop a horse doing a job!

I wouldn’t vet but then I’m an experienced buyer. I’d always advise someone else too though. TBs in training can have a whole host of issues that could make the initial 1.5k purchase a drop in the ocean. Best OP goes in with eyes wide open.

I would def go for it! I probably wouldn’t vet either at that price, but I think it’s the sensible thing to do.

The only thing I would say, and this is very very cynical of me indeed and probably grossly unfair on the sellers, but sometimes sellers can point out a problem to deflect from other problems and make themselves look like they are being honest, when in fact they are hiding bigger issues.

it’s just that when they heard you were getting a 5 stage vetting, they rang up to tell you about the sarcoid….that’s all that made me think of it. They were probably hoping you wouldn’t get a vetting done at that price. Can you attend the vetting? Might be worth it….
Anyway, I’m probably just being a cynical old goat and I’ll be shot down for it. The honest truth is, if it were me, I’d 100% be taking a punt on this one, probably without a vetting, and I’d get her home and give her my all.

You can buy a horse with no sarcoid then have it develope them so for that price I’d take the risk. My old boys sarcoid where there from purchasing and never got any bigger and I never treated them.

Whoa, there. By no means all sarcoids are 'treatable and manageable'. That is a false statement.

Untreatable and spreading sarcoids have been the death knell of too many good horses, even now.

Sarcoids are treatable and manageable. I have had several lasered off a horse with no ill effects. If she ticks all of your boxes this is a very minor issue compared to how it used to be.

I agree on singles, multiples are a different issue and I would want a vet who knows how to spot the sometimes very subtle circles in the coat where the colour changes but nothing else is visible or feelable at first.

One in the armpit would not worry me.

The vetting is more of a check to see what we’re dealing with rather than a pass or fail situation. And for £340 I figured it was worth doing the five stage over the two stage. Now with the additional news of the sarcoid, I know what I’m willing to deal with on top of that and what I’m not.

There is a little bit more to this mare behaviour wise as someone fudged up earlier in her retraining but since then she’s been a saint, the sellers have been really open about her history and have worked hard with her. But I’m not a novice and I know she’s a lovely mare given the chance and a bit of time.

This is a good point!! I paid a fair bit more for my ex racer. He had lumps and bumps. I went for a 2 stage, just to check the obvious!

This time last year noticed a small lump, has suddenly grown to be the size of an orange, bleeding ( in 2 months). Specialist vet has said it is not treatable as too much healthy tissue would have to be removed and there are small offshoots around. Other than this he is fit and healthy. I have been told that at some point in the not too distant future I will have to make the decision to let him go. He is 13. Personally I will never buy another horse with any trace of a Sarcoid. He had nothing when I bought him 9 years ago. Totally devastated.

Wow Domirati, that is terrible news. They can become really aggressive, is the new lump in the same site as the one that was removed? I had a mare who had one return twice on her ear which eventually went after laser surgery and acyclovir. I hope your horse can stay comfortable as long as possible.

It is on his flank so rugs knocking the scabs off. Not bothering him at the moment, still lying down okay and rolling and not in any pain. Still riding him. Just feel very helpless and emotional knowing I am going to have to make that decision for a horse that otherwise looks fantastic.

I had all my horses' sarcoids treated by Jeremy Kemp-Symonds, if he wasn't the person who treated your boy this time I would recommend him to provide a second opinion.

Hi all just an update, I’m glad I got the vetting. Vet was really thorough and sadly found another small beginning sarcoid in an unfortunate place. Also a couple of other things, which on their own wouldn’t be awful, added together was a no-go. Sad but I think the right call was to walk away.
