she is free to good home and able to hack out still - which is all I want...what do you guys think, she has no other health problems apart from the athritis in hocks and she is a hardy typical cob..x
Hobby is now a lot older than that, and also has arthritis in her hocks. I would say go for it, because Hobs can still hack, jump and do low level dressage, so if you got the cob on a good management regime I should think she'd be suitable for what you want.
I think the key is a good routine, and careful management (supplements, best kept in or turned out, and careful, slow work on fitness etc)
I would say go for it. If shes free, then there isnt anything to worry about, when parting with your money.
If your keeping her at livery and have to pay, then its worth it for some fun hacking time. You may be able to keep her fit and go for a few dressage competitions? Take her to fun rides, at a walk/trot.
If you keeping her on your own land, then it sounds perfectly logical to me.
She will need somebody willing to share time and love!!
Go for it. I have a boy with arthritus in his hocks doesn't affect him at all. He can be slightly stiff but i still, canter, gallop, compete, jump 3ft+ with him. x
My mare has arthritis in her hocks and still does everything. Provided it hasn't reached a stage where you're using painkillers to keep them going (not that I object to that in certain cases) I can't see a problem.
Nadia has got arthritis in 1 hock and she still does her best to keep up with an ex-racer on the beach lol.
Nadia is kept 24/7 365 days a year and on Pernamax tablets for her joints and she is sound.
No, I wouldn't take on a horse of her age with said condition. I might seem heartless but why is the owner 'loaning' her (washing her hands of) and why are you ready to take on someone elses problem? A bad horse costs just as much (if not more) than a healthy horse. There are very many horses out there who cost very little and will give you years of happiness. Take my advice, leave well alone.
If you're just going to hack as you state she is suitable for, then yes. But if you're going to want to do more than that, no, it's not fair on the horse, nor the seller who I imagine is wanting their horse to go to a good home.
Why must you get a 'free' horse, instead of saving for a couple of months and buying something inexpensive but with a bit more potential to suit you? Having read some of your posts before you don't strike me as the type who does just want to hack, so don't compromise just because its a free horse. If you are 100% sure you are just going to hack, then go for it, cobs are brilliant little creatures!
Yes i am only a happy hacker AB, its a riding school that are giving her away...they didnt even want to know where she would be kept or anything so I am guessing they dont really care so much for this lovely little mare. x
