A 7yo ex racer- raced (badly) as a 2yo, crib bites (not much when living out), green to ride but doesn't do anything naughty. Has apparently kicked someone in the stable but doesn't usually show any hint of aggression (possibly may have been scared?). OK to load, good to clip and in traffic, stands to be mounted, good with other horses. Not novice ride.

Or PTS?

Yes, I would give him a chance. I'm assuming he is 'not a novice ride' as he is green. He could make a nice hack/good all rounder for someone with a bit of work.

If i had land enough to let him be out as much as possible then yes icertainly would.

Why put to sleep? Sorry, may have misunderstood post but plenty of horses kick out in stables all the time. Or was it a very bad kick? Other than that, it sounds like a fairly normal albeit green ex racer - only youngish as well so I guess my answer would be yes, considering points made above as well.

give him a chance until he proves otherwise. my exracer came with a few problems like that but they have been worked through.

If I liked the horse and it would do what I wanted then none of what's said would put me off. I am sure there are plenty of people out there who have been kicked by their horses on occasion, whether intentional or not! Plus, I think a lot of ex-racers crib so, provided you can give it decent turn out and stimulation then you can lessen the problem.

Thanks all, what I am trying to establish (not clearly for obvious reasons) is whether someone would take on a horse that I have aquired with the aformentioned problems. Apparently kick was quite bad but she had just arrived and I think she was a little freaked. She has always been fine with me but would not want to send to a kid or something just in case!

Not advertising BTW!

She will have the potential to be a nice riding horse - if you have the time, patience and knowledge to handle her sensitively, school her correctly and most importantly, gain her trust.:) But I think time is the most important factor. If you have that - go for it!:D

If it was me looking.. definately. Every horse deserves a chance and with the right training and the right person the horse will become something good :)

One kick doesn't make her a vicious horse (Hope I spelt that right). Yes I did take a mare on, just like the one you have, complete nightmare for the 1st year and now she's a loving sort of as she likes her own space had her going on 8 years and would never part with her. Try and find someone who has the time and patience to bring her on. I love my mare and she in her own way loves me.:):):):):)

No of course, I wouldn't consider her vicious at all. In fact, she's rather sweet. Do you think someone would take her on loan? Or are all loaners looking for quiet riding club cob types?

If I didn't have 4 horses, 2 which need breaking in. I'd be on your doorstep, so yes, there are lots of people who would take her on, just pick the one who have the time and patience and I think she will do very well.:D:D

sounds like a lot of green ex racehorses, & as a PP said, plenty of horses kick in the stable, i've had a couple that kicked if you tried to put travel boots on, or clean out stud holes, certainly never put me off, just learnt not to get in the way!

Why on earth would you PTS? Would you be asking if the horse was a warmblood, or a connie, or a well-bred dressage horse? A lot of horses crib - not just ex-racers. Every horse is green at some point in it's life - it's normal. And a lot of horses kick out as the others have said - you learn to know the horse, deal with the bad behaviour and get out of the way. I don't know one flawless horse!

I wouldn't PTS, HH. A few people have told me I should and she was going to be before I took her. Of course I wouldn't be asking if she was a warmblood or a dressage horse as they are easier to find homes for! I suppose she has a lot going against her is all- I couldn't possibly vouch for her never kicking as, although I've never seen it myself, I know that she has in the past. She's green, she's a cribber AND she's an ex racer so all those points will put people off wanting her.

PS. It doesn't put me off but unfortunately she can't stay here forever so she will need to go! :(

I would take on yes.
Kick sound irrelevant from what you have said & anyway horses can people different depending on the person handling them.

I have a cribber and he doesn't lose condition from it at all, I compare it more to having a fag! He sometimes wears the Weaver Miracle Collar which is great as long as it's fitted correctly.

With the right education it sounds like this would be a lovely horse.

Yes, sounds pretty straightforward compaired to some, besides the horse is still only a 2yr old.

Hope the horse finds a good home.

Yep i would most definatley take him on. Sounds like a challenge. PTS isn't an option for me TBH, i think they should all have a chance, on of the best rides at our race yard is a complete cow in the stable, you can't groom her at all she has to be washed all the time, she kicks, bites, rears and generally tries to kill you while tacking her up, but she is a sucker for a mint!!!! Got to love a personality.
Any horse can kick, you just need to be more aware.

hey, yes i would def take this on. In the right hands horses with issues can flourish, many horse's don't enjoy the race industry, they can get v stressed and are completely different in a one to one home, nothing against racing but this is a common issue, cribbing/weaving etc and i wouldn't let it put me off at all, probably a nice little horse once it settles-so you own it now but need to sell it on is that is issue santalover?

:D Would and have!! Took on 4 weeks ago a 7 year old TB mare. Ex-racer good breeding, not bad conformation (not brilliant but she's sooooo pretty!!!) she hacks like an absolutely dream, goes silly in big fields (expected) is terrified of the beach (unusual) and is a princess to handle!! She is sweet, kind and very very loving...all for £200!! Unfortunately I cannot give her the time she needs so we've got her up for loan but I wasn't going to allow a horse as nice as her to go for meat without a fight.

Go for it, I'm sure you won't regret it. :D

Just read the thread properly and noticed you had one for loan, put her on Project horses, we've had alot of interest about our mare and got 2 people coming to see her on sunday. I've been 100% honest about her 'issues'...which are less than the 'issues' my own cob has if I wrote down all his behaviour problems!!!!
