Would you try hunting?

As a nervous rider - how are you treated by more confident riders?

We are still waiting to hear back from a few owing to it being summer holidays for many, but all hunts participating in Hunting Newcomers Week will be providing the day for free

I would love to, but my horse has tendon problems, she used to love hunting though. I could see if my sister will let me borrow her pony but infuriatingly for me she doesn't agree with hunting so therefore is unlikely to let her pony go!

There seems to be a lot of people who don't have suitable horses but would like to give it a try. if people aren't able to borrow a horse could you list some details on the CA website for where you can get hirelings from, near each hunt that is participating in this? Together with how much a hireling would cost roughly, that would be really useful for people like me.

i love hunting just a shame thers not more going off in our area

I've never tried it before, I wouldn't mind at all if I had a horse suitable.

No, confession time - suitability of the horse has got nothing to do with it in all honesty. The only reason I've never been hunting is because yours truly is petrified of jumping anything bigger/scarier than your average fallen log.

Otherwise I'd happily give it a go.

I'm not the bravest jumper in the world. I spoke to our Sec 2 weeks ago about autumn hunting, which I will be doing, and about proper hunting. I've said to her that although the horse will jump anything when he's following, I have no desire to jump huge hedges, ditches, wire etc. She just said "call me before Opening Meet" and I'll tell you which meets will suit you and which to avoid".

There's also often a non jumping Master...

Perhaps you could get hireling yards to do a discount on the days the free hunts are being put on, with the hope it will attract more custom back to themselves if people enjoy it and want to go again.

There needs to be an 'other'!
Selected yes because I would if I had a horse to try it on as have never been before; a) because of having no such suitable horse and b) I would need an easier day with optional jumps etc as opposed to jumping in at the deep end as it were and c) the cost.

Sounds like a great idea

Good idea, I will look into this and send an email out today to the hunts seeing if they would be able to 'have a word!"

I would adore to go hunting - but living in the Channel Islands is a non starter for me (oh and lack of a horse sane on social rides let alone out hunting!)

Seems like a fantastic idea though!!

Sounds good. Especially if you can get the Atherstone hunt involved

I would, but I don't know anyone around here who hunts, and certainly don't know hunt etiquette, so wouldn't go on my own. The advantage of taking a horse is that it would have to be hired/borrowed from some-one who (assumedly) knows about hunting and could tell me all the important 'need to know's and perhaps keep me company. That would be my other reason for not going I suppose- either on foot, or horseback.

It's a nice idea tho, I occasionally go to meets and just watch for a bit out of curiosity

I'd love to go, I hunted in my teens but despite my best efforts I haven't got out again but would love to go, Any of the Scottish Border or Lanarkshire Hunts participating?

Hi Chaps

The idea of the Newcomers day is so you can learn the traditions/etiquette

I hope you are able to find a horse and come along

Ooo. I am seriously thinking/hoping to go with Theresa_F this year. Have never been before although my beast has hunted in the past. Are any of the Essex or surrounding hunts taking part?

Oooh this sounds interesting - what are the dates again? I have a friend who would like to try hunting, but has restraints with Uni term time etc. I would take my mare as moral support for her - my girl LURVES her hunting.

I love hunting, the only thing stopping me going more often is the cost. We went twice last year, I can't afford to go more often but it doesn't seem quite fair to D to only go occassionally because she's not as fit as those who go every week. Will certainly look for details of the free hunt if either the Atherstone or the Meynell are getting involved.

I can't reply "I won't hunt live quarry" which is what I want to put. It may be illegal but my local hunt is openly hunting fox and I don't believe in chasing animals for my own fun. I've tried it, I've seen the fox run for its life in front of a pack of baying hounds, and it wasn't pretty. They should be lamped and shot, not chased to exhaustion, dug out and shot.

well, thankfully, next summer when the Tories get back in, Hunting will be "service as normal"....although i have to say that good old TB and his cronies did, in a roundabout way, hunting a service...as hunting has never been do popular for 25 years!!!

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!!!!!

YES! i have wanted to have a go at hunting for years, and this year is the year I have decided. I have been thinking of it out hacking for weeks, C is a lazy so and so at time and i thought taking her hunting would pep her (and me!) up a bit

QR

What a great idea! I clicked yes although I have to say, I'd be a bit concerned about a load of newbies being completely out of control not being the best introduction. The sec of my local hunt picks good meets for me and last year I went out on a quiet day with a small field of experienced hunters. Also she reduced the cap as I was only going out for a bit, which was very good of her (felt awful as I stayed out for 3 hours in the end rather than the 1 that I planned, but she wasn't bothered in the slightest!).

So I'm not sure I wouldn't rather just pay and know it's going to be a good, calm introduction for my horse. Having said that, I'd probably just do both

QR.... haven't read the whole thread ( bad me) but was sitting here saying YES!
I have never been hunting and I finally have a horse that is capable and a hunt close to me is doing a country day so we are off to that as I thought that this would be a nice introduction to the concept. Financially I couldn't afford hunting, but am hoping to perhaps do a couple of half days at christmas.
