Would you use a new vet from the same practice for vetting?

Potentially buying a horse from somewhere miles away.
Seller has suggested using her practice but a vet who hasn't seen the horse before.
Thoughts?

No, is the short answer. The vendor is a client of the practice and the new vet works for that practice. You can still get a full history IF the owner agrees to disclosure no matter who you get to vet the horse.

I don't think the vet practice themselves will want to do this. When I bought second pony from a person who was with the same vet practice as me I had to find another vets to do the vetting.

Vet practice were ok to do it and firmly said they would be acting for me as their client. But I just checked with a solicitor and they said better to be safe than sorry and use someone else. So that's what I'll do.

Providing the owner allows full disclosure of all records and the new vet is an equine specialist I would seriously consider it.

The newer vetting forms require the vet to declare if they have been treating the horse for anything. If the vet feels they can't vet the horse without breaking confidentiality they will refuse the vetting. Hence there is now an advantage to getting the sellers vet. Puts vets in a very awkward position but big advantage to the buyer.
