Hi, I am looking at a rising 3 yr old filly next week from a very reputable stud. She has been very lightly backed. Would you get a horse of this age vetted?? Obviously you cant get a 5 stage vetting so would a basic vetting be worth it? If so what is the going cost now a days of a basic vetting??

I'd definitely get a vetting completed.

As for cost, not sure. just give you vet a call and they will give you a quote.

What breed , colour etc etc need more details, very exciting :D

She's a baby andalusian! Should grow to about 15.3 and a lovely Grullo colour. I go and view her next week so am very exited. I lost my old boy a couple of weeks ago and just cant be without a horse. I have not had to have a horse vetted for 20 yrs, so didnt know whether it was worth it as she is not fully backed yet. I guess a basic vetting would just cover eyes / heart / etc?!

she sounds lovely. Sorry about your old boy.

Personally I would want a full vetting.

Good luck

I would get a full vetting, if you bought a Tb on a sale at 2 (Talking about NH store) it would have a full vetting and be unbroken and if I sold an ISH sport horse rising 3 I would expect that the purchaser would want a full vetting. A wind test is very important to me as I'm producing potential athletes and problems are more likely to arise in that area than eyes or heart imo.

They won't be able to do a full vetting unless she lunges well. They won't be able to do any vetting if she's not fairly well handled! (although Id except a 3yr at a stud to be fine)

However they can check soundness if she leads and for eyes, heart and lumps and bump if she's used to being touched. There's not much else you need to check!

She sounds lovely, good luck!

I would. I got a 15mth old vetted, just a basic health check plus an opinion from the vet - as I trust him - of general confo for what I'd want him f

I wouldn't bother to vet an unbroken or barely broken horse. But I am experienced and have bought many, many horses; if it pleases you why not have a vet check her vitals. Good luck with her, Spanish horses are wonderful, if not everyone's cup of tea (I specialise in PRE's and Lusitanos and have 4).

Personally, if under £3000 odd no, if over then yes. Without x rays you won't get much extra info on a baby anyway I don't think, and with x rays will cost you ££££. You have to weigh up the risk you are willing to take with the outlay you are willing to make..

Like previous poster said tho, I'm experienced and have bought lots of horses, so try my own eye and judgement to a certain extent.

she is lighyly backed and has had a rider on her back a couple of times so would be well handles. She is on the market for 2k so not a huge amount but enough for me! I dont need a vet cert for insurnace purposes just peace of mind in the basic areas. Would a local vet to the stud (not local to me) do just a simple check? or would it be classed as a 2 stage vetting??

That's quite cheapfor a PRE I think so id want her checked over.

Any local vet will do it. Try not to use the stud's vet (and be suspicious if the stud offer or insist). Speak to the vet and just tell them what you want.

I would ask my own vet to do a vetting with a horse of that type, regardless of price. The money is not the issue as much as is the horse living long and performing well, and you feeling fairly sure you've chosen well.

I would get a vetting done just to make sure, especially since she has been broken in waaay too young I'd be worried on the damage done from that. And yes get a vet that is not their own - any decent vet would not do a vetting on a clients horse anyway.

That's quite cheapfor a PRE ...

sorry to be pedantic but did OP say it was a PRE? not all andalusians are and one that isnt, would be drastically cheaper than one that is!

anyway, in answer to the question, yes! get it vetted! I got a 2 stage middle of last year and I think it was around £120ish mark or just under but it depends what area you're in.

good luck with the little lady, she sounds like a stunner!

You could always ask your vet to recommend a vet, nearer to the stud, to do the vetting, just ask the stud who their vet is first. Most vets over here would know a vet in most areas of the country or know of one, however I know with larger distances etc it might not be the case in the UK. I would get one vetted even if I was ONLY paying 2k, its too hard making money these days to make mistakes!;)
