curious really, i was fitting a mouth guard for house hockey tomorrow (dont ask - i last played hockey 3/4 years ago

) and wondered if i should start wearing a mouthguard for eventing? and also does anyone wear one for xc?

Would it be more of a hinderance than a help? Or do you think it has some value? opinions please!

I've heard that one eventer here was riding at adv, fell off at fence 4 and horse kicked all her teeth out...

I have broken teeth eventing, but i really wouldnt want to event in one, i talk to my horse all they way round. I had a dentist one for hockey that i could wear but no thanks. Having said that lots of NH jockeys wear them!!

I think it would interfere with breathing and take some getting used to and as Marymoo said, it wouldn't help when trying to talk to your horse!
I wouldn't!

Well why not?

re: breathing - if you can't breathe then why do people wear them playing rugby and hockey etc which are farrrr more high cardio than eventing (arguably [sp])

You may look a wally, but I would rather have my teeth than falsies!

may look into this!

I might consider it, but only if it was one which meant my speech wasn't compromised- like Marymoo i talk all the way round, even if it is just 'Slow down you daft b*gger and at least try to jump a few frigging fences!!'

I played rugby in mine at top level and never had a problem. You do not even notice them unless shouting at your team mates! If fitted properly they fit perfectly and actually can help with concussion if you fall on your head and with your jaw.

i think Matt Ryan wears one, doesn't he? i'm sure one of the top riders does.
yes, i would wear one, probably if i spent a lot of money on fancy veneers on my teeth and wanted to protect them! i know of a few eventers who have had rather nasty face/mouth injuries.

What Lec says is completley true, but most people don't get fitted properley. They help prevent concussion and really work.
Did Matt Ryan wear one quite often? (may have wrong eventer but am sure one does or did!)

A good mouthguard isn't noticeable when in - I think it's a good idea to use one, so if you're going to then mould it to your teeth properly.

I think the biggest concern for me though, is that if someone lost their hat silk and proceeded to ride with just a skull cap at the same time as they had a mouthguard in, I would actually split my sides laughing at the sight of them

PMSL! The best would be if they had the same colour scheme as my OH's mouthguard, which has the front two teeth blacked out

i use one for polo now as my dad broke his jaw when he was playing once, and yes i sound ridiculous and probably look it but id prefer that then a broken jaw!
but yes i think it is probably a good idea at higher levels...

I used to have a black and white stripey one when i played lacrosse, it looked gruesome!!!!

not sure I would want to wear one xc coz of breathing, I think I feel trussed up enough in back protector etc and a mouth guard might be a step too far, also I would be a little worried about choking on it!

I think if I had shelled out £££££ on my gnashers then maybe, but as they are pretty average having them knocked out might mean I could get some better replacements! hahahaha

If I found one that was comfy and fitted then probably yes - but my hockey one is awful, constantly moving (probably not much use) and I wouldn't be able to talk but then again it may prevent awful pics with my god wide open!

Matt does wear one, he still seems to manage to talk allright in it

and breathe for that matter

He's worn one for years - Marie didn't and had a horrible fall 18 months ago and lost some front teeth

Ah what a great post. When I've had my baby I'm embarking on an 'invisalign' and whitening treatment on my teeth.
Considering this is costing me over £3000 I should maybe look into getting something to protect them afterwards.....I'm going to ask my dentist about this at my next appointment

Just pondering this, one my teeth arent great so getting them all knocked out and new ones doesnt bother me that much, previous boss had and you wouldnt know. two, when i broke my tooth, i hit my mouth/face on her neck as she reared/i fell! If i had a gum guard in i actually think i would have done more damage as the whole lot would have been hit rather than the one that connected with my stick/her neck or whichever bit i actually hit.

...i talk to my horse a lot on the xc too and i wouldn't want to confuse him/her with it all coming out garbled!

LOL!!! me too, and it's also my concern... I'd wear one though

I probably would wear one if i was brave enough to do XC.

I had years of treatment on my teeth when i was younger, 4 yanked out, removable braces, train track braces, retainers etc etc as a result of which i have a fear of the dentist so no way would i want any of mine knocked out!
