I'm not exactly looking for something so young, but this one is only 5 minutes down the road!

Dam showjumped to 1m40 before retiring to stud, Sire is by Golden Heights.

Also, how much would you offer?

I deally I wanted something that was 3 but would consider a younger on eif the price was right, as I have the land, then get an older one next year.

what do you think? Should I ask for more videos and photos? Or would it be too risky?

As I don't know anything about you, I have to as.Have you any experience with young horses?Can you afford good help if you need it.What about the backing? Please excuse me if you are very experienced
 
I think he looks and sounds really nice, so why not put in a really low offer if you like him? You can always sell him if he doesn't turn out as you were expecting, as it is always a gamble with baby horses. A friend was given a nice foal recently due to the credit crunch so worth a try with a low offer! I recently paid £1300 for a quite nicely bred filly foal about 6 months old to make about 16.3hh hunter dont know if that helps.
 
I have never had a youngster myself, but my trainer (who is 5 minutes away) is very experienced with youngsters, and we will be backing one of hers next year. I have helped back other peoples youngsters and my trainer has said that is was time I started to look for a youngster myself as I 'need' another horse after my current one (does that make sense?) My horse is really too old to sell, and I can't afford to buy a decent 6/7yr old. I have discussed a lot of things with my trainer, so yes I am ready for a youngster of my own...

He looks a nice sort doesn't he? But, he's only 3 months old - so it's an awful long wait for you to be able to do anything with him.

Also, the other consideration is how you would keep him. Are you at livery? If so that could be really problematic. Do you have other youngsters you could keep him with??

Personally, I think that unless someone has the set up - weanlings and anything generally under a year old are to be avoided.

Price wise, no idea. Could be anything from £1k to £8k (going on recent personal experience).
 
I have other horses that I can ride whilst I wait for him, plus my instructor has a couple of 2/3yr olds that I will be riding for the next few years (gaining experience!).

I have 5 hectares at home, so keeping him is not a problem. He wouldn't be kept with other foals, as I couldn't afford to buy 2. I might be able to buy a pony foal, then sell it, depending on how much he was.

You can't keep a weenling with adult, shod horses (imo). The risk of damage or worse is simply too great. You'd be suprised at how aggressive adult horses can be with babies.

An older kindly pony mare - or old broodmare, or with his own age group is always advised. So think carefully on this one.
 
I sound really naive here, sorry. I'm not honset!

I know that he couldn't be kept in a whole group like that, my gelding would hate him! My field is seperated, so he would have his own space with one of the mares, who is unshod, and used to be a nanny to foals in her last home. Or as I said before I would consider getting a pony to keep him company for the first few years.

ETS: I thought you just wanted to know that he wouldn't be stuck out in a field on his own with noone about, didn't think you would take it that I was going to put him out with everyone else and leave him to it

I am in a similar position as you as my horse is nearing retirement age but still good for a few years yet (all being well). I cannot afford an already broken in horse so am casually looking at what youngsters are out there at the mo - anything 1 to 3 years preferably.

I am not sure about anything quite so young for myself but a good friend of mine bought herself a little filly at about 5 mths old I think and she kept it with her big mare and her little old pony and she has been fine. If the adult horses you have are ok temperament wise (you knwo thjem best!) then it's no more of an issue in my opinion. My friend's mare is big (17hh) and a miserable cow in general plus she had much less turnout space but, apart from the usual put-you-in-your-place type bullying she was fine.

We bought an 8 month old colt foal. Had him gelded and left him where he was bred until it was "safe" to put him with our mare.

We had never had one so young before so made sure he was really well handled and had a really good temprement. We saw some who were less well handled and felt they would be a step too far for first time ownership of a baby.

He is at grass livery with our old unshod mare who loves her new job of nanny.
We have lots of help on hand and have really made sure that he was "the one for us" before taking him on.
So far so good

I would go for it provided you can ensure that help is on hand if you need it.
We are really enjoying him. It is great fun introducing him to new things and very rewarding.

He will be backed at 3 or 4 and until then he is our "project". Who knows how he will turn out but even if he doesn't turn into a decent dressage horse (that is the "plan") hopefully he will be a nice person who will make a lovely riding horse.

hey , i likethe look of him and i realy have a thing for bay roans, last yr i started looking for my own horse wasnt particularly looking for a youngster but when i seen vinnie i just had to have him, i bought him at 3months old and got him transported from wales to ne of scotland when he was 7months and now i am just completely in love with him, i have never had a youngster although worked with and backed young horses as my previous job. i paid £1100 for him he is a tb x knabstrupper ,appaloosa to make 16.2hh dont know if this will help you at all but good luck.
