buy a lame horse?
Friend is thinking about getting a big 5yr horse from a guy we know who breeds eventers and sjers. It done pre novice last year and is a xc machine apparently, nice correct paces, jump etc but has been lame on a hind for about 4 months possibly more. Hasnt been seen by a vet as owner says no point as the horse isnt going to make top grade so better not to waste the money and sell/give horse away. So friend is debating taking it on without being looked at by a vet, apparently if it came sound it would be worth 10k!!! So would you take this horse for free that is not knowing why its lame and if its permanent?

He is a big young horse who seems to have done quite a lot already and the fact he has been lame for so long is worrying.

I think your friend could be leaving herself wide open to a huge amount of expense and heartache.

If she is determined to go ahead with it could she get it looked at by a vet first?

And if it doesn't come sound it could cost 10k... (maybe slight exageration, but it could cost a lot!)

Why bother? That guy would do a jig of happiness if some mug bought a horse that hadn't been sound for over 4 months.

Well atleast im not the only one who thinks its not a good idea!! I didnt want to burst the bubble so just said hes lovely lol But now im thinking i should have said something more constructive!!! Dont think she'd listen as she believes its a great opportunity etc etc ... He is a lovely horse to look at and everyone likes him so thats probably a contibuting factor towards her decision and it'll be her 1st horse so is getting a bit carried away!!
