Georgie is in 24/7 at the moment until the weather dries up a bit. Its a real struggle for me to get down in the mornings, what with getting my son to schoo, the 40 min round trip and work. YO feeds/hays and waters in the morning anyway and has suggested that he will come to no harm if I dont muck him out till I get down after work.
I cant get my head round it

Agree, Id need to be skipping that out (or having it skipped out by someone else).

Im on full livery and the horses are skipped out in the afternoon regardless of whether or not they have been out.

I muck out twice a day when they are in but if I couldn't for some reason once a day wouldn't kill them, Hay & water must be done at least tice a day (water twice & hay 3 times for ours)

At the moment my horse is in 24/7 due to mud fever. He gets all the poos and and big wet patches taken out in the morning and a full muck out in the evening. He is a big horse though and does a lot of poo. If its just a small pony that doesnt make a lot of mess I would just do a quick skip out then a muck out out once a day.

Muck out once but skip out in the evenings as well so only wet in there the whole day!

He goes out for a few hours though in the morning

Mine are on part livery. If the weather's atrocious then they're not turned out, and on those days they'll only be mucked out once a day. YO does hay and water for them, so I don't mind having a very mucky bed to do in the evening occasionally.
When my mare was on 24/7 box rest then I went up in the morning to skip out as I didn't want her to get her injury too dirty, and I had to go up to change her dressing anyway.

Gotta be twice a day for me I'm afraid. Fully mucked out in the morning - skipped out during the day.

Or put him out.

As long as he has a good bed so is not stood in wet bedding it won't do him any harm, it's only a short term measure until the field dry out after all.

Most important is having hay, feed and water. It would probably be preferable to skip out, but realistically, what harm if it going to do him?

he will be fine - it won't be every day, and on those days when you just can't get there he will survive..won't be very nice in the evening though!

Mmmmm I suppose you are right. He is on a deep litter shavings bed and he is fairly clean most of the time. It would only be for 4 days a week (the days I work) the rest of the time I can go up twice a day no problem at all.
Thanks everyone.

Can't you have the horse mucked out in the morning by the YO - do they offer this service?

Edt: Can't your OH take your little one to school so that you can do the nag?

I only muck out once a day (after work) if my horse stays in. I dont have a lot of choice as i cant get down the yard in the mornings and my friend puts her out. Its never done my horse any harm.

As long as she has got fresh water and hay then the mucking out will have to wait. I dont like doing it but needs must.

If i am down there though then she gets mucked out in the morning and skipped out throughout the day.

Luckily for me she doesn't stay in that much.

I'm lucky in that I only have a 2 min walk to yardm but get up extra early to muck out etc. I skip out in mornings, muck out more at night, and have a good muck out at w'ends.
I have a child to get ready and to school, a toddler to get ready and look after, work 2 days and the other days usually have appointments / groups etc.

Normally yes - but he has just lost his groom and is full to bursting so not an option.

Unfortunately not - he is a shift worker and on the shifts when he is at home at that time he is in bed.

This is the only problem with my new yard - the distance - my old yard was a 7 minute drive away but the new one is over twice as far - there just arent enough hours in the day!

Your YO may have lost his groom, but how long does it take to skip out? Not long. I can do a full muck out of Amy plus skip out four others, top up hay, change rugs if needed and put Amy out all in around 30 mins.

Either way, I'd have to get up an hour earlier then. I couldn't leave my horse like that all day.

Its not a case of just getting up an hour earlier - I wish it were as simple as that.

At my yard (pickle is on full livery on weekdays i do him at weekends) they muck out them in the morning change rugs in necessary. Then skip out again in the afternoon give them all fresh water. Then they are finally skipped out before everyone leaves, given fresh water some more hay

It won't do him any harm as long as the bed is deep enough, you obv want your horsey to have as nice a bed as possible but I don't think he will be too bothered!

In the long term it would be bad management but as it is only while the weather is cr*p and there is no groom I think you'll be fine to do it this way.

Take out the worst of the poo? Then a full muck out in evening. Would depend on the bed/bedding though. If was a small stable of straw with a wet/dirty horse then no. If was a clean horse in a large stable and deep bed of shavings then maybe.

Can't see the problem . If he's in 24/7 then what does it matter what time of day you do him. It'll be the same time amount of time inbetween if you do it morning or evening!!

Mine are skipped out in the morning if they are in and then mucked out in the evening.

However, it wouldn't kill them not be skipped, it just makes the evening muckout less of a chore.

Personally I would rather they were mucked out in the evening so they could lie down at night in a fairly clean stable rather than done in the morning and left until the next day.
