I voted no, as after having horse with tendon problems and having to box rest her for a grand total of a year, I dont think I could do it again, she was never 100% afterwards
No. Having shared a horse who damaged a tendon in the field, had a year on a combination of box rest and being turned away, just to damage another tendon while turned out (different field) just as she was coming back into work, leaving no option but to PTS. Never knowing put myself in that position, too much time, money, worry and heartache.
I agree. Why buy a horse that's definitely going to need vet attention (and you won't be able to insure) when you can buy something that has nothing wrong with it?
well it's not my horse, it belongs to someone at the same yard and he has been lame for months now and it has now been determined that it is his tendons and he has to have another 4 months box rest. His owner wants to sell him when he is sound and I said if he were mine and I was selling him anyway I would see if I could sell him now cheap as he is a lovely horse and it is going to cost her nearly £1000 in livery & feed for the four months and he could still be lame. I said I would ask around and see what others thought.
I think if it were a nice mare who would have potential as a brood mare then its a different story but otherwise its a very tough situation. The only other option is (depending on if the horse is now not on box rest) finding somewhere else where she could get cheap grass livery over the summer and leave him to recover?
eta sorry i didnt read the bit properly about a few more months box rest.......alternatively could she find a smaller yard with cheaper rent/ less facilities (which she is not going to need) until he comes right?
I wouldnt. It costs as much to keep a good one as it does a bad one. Unless it was a very well bred and well put together mare that I was intending to breed from . Even then I would want to know it would be strong enough to carry a foal.
I must admit if it was mine Id be tempted to turn it out for a year and then see what happens. if its still lame then PTS.
Nope. I was offered one for free last year and even turned that down. Not worth the risk or the heart ache. And you'd always have the worry in the back of your mind that the horse could break down again... Plenty of horses in the world - you don't need to buy one with such a big problem
