Would you ever consider loaning a horse where you fully loaned the horse while owner was away at Uni, and then shared the horse when owner was at home?

Also side question, would you ever consider loaning a horse where the yard had plenty of great off-road hacking close by, but only a field to flat and jump in? (Horse must stay at this yard as provides company to another horse).

Your two-pence would be much appreciated.

Yes, on both counts. Hacking is more important to me than a school and the sharing element might be tricky, but it might be a good thing for if you want to go away or to an event, if coordinated well.

Q1 - yes, provided I got on well with the owner and both had the same ideas regarding horse
Q2 - yes - if your main interest is hacking and not serious competing

Yes. Hundreds of years ago when I had my first horse my best friend took him over when I was working abroad for several years but when I came home for holidays she let me have full use of him whenever I wanted. 40 years later we are still friends so it obviously worked ?

Q1 yes, this can work well depending on your circs, I did the exact thing over the winter, kept my friends horse ticking over for her but had less commitment/time over the Xmas holidays which was good. Q2 I' not so sure about but if you prefer hacking then that's a no-brainer.

For Q2 I think it just comes down to whether you can ride during the day in the winter months as no school = no lights
On Q1 that should work fine as long as both parties agree a plan in advance

1. No. You work to get/keep horse fit, pick up the tabs and owner breezes in on their holiday to ride the horse. I don’t think so.
2. Yes, but I’m not big into schooling.

1 - as long as normal sharing protocols agreed in advance then I don't see any reason why not (i.e. how many days, rider responsible for jobs on 'their' days, etc)
2 - personally no as I work full time so riding in winter needs somewhere with lights - but that's just me - plenty would and do livery at these types of places.

If you are talking about getting someone in your own home then you might also think about how they will fee riding on their own all the time if hacking it their main thing

But on the plus side, your bills halve during the ‘share’ period, plus you have the opportunity of a little less work, and the opportunity to go away at no additional cost.
